Re: Socket 7 desktop mainboard and ACPI Suspend to RAM (STR)

Hi James,

FIC VA-503+ doesn't support ACPI S3 State.
Of course, no one really supported ACPI S3 State then despite chipset vendors claiming to have hardware level support in them.

Re: My GA-5SMM cannot seem to handle more than 512 MB . . .

Hi James, I was curious to see if having so much loading on the SDRAM bus was the culprit of the memtest86+ errors I have been observing. So I installed 3 DS 128MB modules (6 loads; Total of 384 MB), and I did not observe any issues. I also installed 448 MB of RAM (5 loads; 1 DS 256 MB, 1 DS 128MB, ...

Re: My GA-5SMM cannot seem to handle more than 512 MB . . .

Hi Jim, I have all kinds of SDRAM DIMMs I have collected from E-waste sites. After spending so many days on this issue, it appears that if the SDRAM DIMM slots have 5 or more loads (1 load = SS DIMM, 2 loads = DS DIMM, SS = Single Sided, DS = Double Sided), I get errors when I run Memtest86+ within ...

Socket 7 desktop mainboard and ACPI Suspend to RAM (STR)

Has any vendor ever produced a Socket 7 mainboard with ACPI S3 State (Suspend to RAM or STR) support? I have read VIA Technologies and SiS chipset data books in the past, and they both claim to support STR in their chipsets, but I have never seen a Socket 7 desktop mainboard to actually support STR....

Re: FIC VA-503+ IDE noise problem

Does anyone have experience (position or negative) of the mainboard's onboard IDE provided by VIA Technologies VT82C586B southbridge?

Re: FIC VA-503+ IDE noise problem

Hi Jim, Actually, my FIC VA-503+ mainboard's RAM is very stable. I have used various 256 MB PC100 SDRAM DIMMs, and none that I know will not work with this system. I have ran Memtest86+, and it simply won't give me memory errors even if I use the most aggressive settings I can think of FIC VA-503+ m...

AGP stability of SiS 5591 chipset

SiS 5591 chipset was sort of a forgotten Socket 7 chipset of the 100 MHz Socket 7 era chipset. I believe the initial version didn't run at 100 MHz for the Socket 7 interface (only at 83 MHz), and I also remember that pretty much only GIGABYTE sold the version the fixed the 100 MHz bus clock support ...

AGP stability of ALi Aladdin V chipset

How stable is the AGP interface of ALi Aladdin V chipset? From I learned, there is Revision E of the chipset in large numbers, but a few Revision G of the chipset was sold near the EOL of the product. I know that Revision G integrated a tag RAM chip so that Socket 7 external caching range went up co...

Fastest graphics card with AGP 3.3V (2X) interface support

A year or so ago, I found BFG Technologies GeForce 7300 GT 512 MB DDR SDRAM AGP graphics card at one junk electronics shop. I found this in their unsorted junk parts section of the store (They also have sorted junk parts section as well, but it costs a few $$$ more.) so I was able to buy it for mere...

FIC VA-503+ IDE noise problem

One annoying problem I have been dealing with is the IDE interface stability issue of my FIC VA-503+ mainboard. When I use both Primary and Secondary IDE channels simultaneously (i.e., Primary IDE for a hard drive and Secondary IDE for a DVD-RW drive), both with 40 conductor IDE cables, I always get...

My GA-5SMM cannot seem to handle more than 512 MB . . .

This is my first time posting here. I am fixing up some of my retired old Socket 7 computers. One of the board I have been working on to fix is GIGABYTE GA-5SMM (SiS 530/5595 chipset). It originally came with Compaq Presario 5301 computer. It was a reliable computer (albeit a slow one) when I used t...
