Incompatible software under XP:

Prime 95:

Version 2.66 and up. They don't even bother to check if there is support for the used instructions (SSE, etc); it just crashes.

I conviced myself that keeping the first machine is a bad idea. I just plain don't use it, it occupies space and when in use it delivers very little peformance for the energy it consumes. So I upgraded the best I could and gave it away. I wouldn't surprise me if it ends up collecting dust in a corne...

It turned out to be that the BIOS is flawed and it enables Write Combining, Write Allocation, etc. for 256MB and 384MB but not for 512MB.

I'm enabling it with WAMonitor and everything seems to be working fine. I'm investigating to see if some add-on card is causing it because it seems weird.

Thanks Andrej. I'm having a weird issue. I just installed the remaining 256MB for 512MB on my Soyo 5EHM system but performance is greatly reduced. I'm aware that with 1MB the top 256MB are not cached by the motherboard but shouldn't the K6-3's cache compensate for it? In performance tests, L2 cache ...

I'm sorry but I'm skeptical to believe there is something special with the chip using multiplier 5.5. However, I don't know that much about the platform to give another explanation. I'll think about it... In the meanwhile, I'd like to build a list of what the machine can and can't do: Runs well: * D...

I'm learning a lot of things, that page DonPedro posted has been very illustrative (for my purposes, it seems like a SiS 530 motherboard is far more attractive than MVP3 or Aladdin 5 simply because it has PCI 2.2 and most modern PCI cards work with it). @Jim: It seems like AMD didn't make good choic...

Yes, I'm wrong in assumng that other chips need more than 1.6v to run at 400 MHz. I wouldn't be surprised if the ATZ can run at 400 MHz with less than 1.6v, though. When a chip is offered as a low power one, it is generally because it is of higher, and not less, quality. Think in terms of intel's LV...

Indeed Jim, for the most part. Theory is the same for any semiconductor, regardless of maker and generation: the lower the voltage a chip can take, the higher the frequency it can operate at. Think about it: what does it mean to take low voltage? To operate reliably where other processors fail. In o...

I used XP with service pack 1A on Superpuppy 3 and that worked just fine with 512 Meg of Ram. Another thing is, I stop updating after a while, because that just bloats Windopes more and more. Done that way I got about 10 points better in Everest with XP than I did with 98SE. Re the install problem,...

@DonPedro: I already tried it and 2000 isn't all that lighter compared to XP as they are essentially the same product. You can disable a lot of things in XP to leave them more or less equivalent. My default install uses only about 85MB of RAM. However, Windows XP is far more supported than 2000 and ...

@Jim: Before investing more time, I'd like to know if it is possible to run an MVP3 system fully functional and fully stable. Otherwise it doesn't seem like it's worth spending more time and money on it... I was planning to add 256MB for 512MB but I stopped after having issues. I actually have a Rad...
