@mikemix re wd100bb: the transfer speed you are refering to is purely theoretical and has no practical meaning. I also would obstain from installing windows xp - this os is way over the power of a socket-7 system. you will be better off with using win 2000. here is a screenshot of what the drive is ...

mikemix,

what brand and model is this 10gb 7200rpm harddisk? I can't believe that that it is able to deliver 30mb/s except when windows caching is left in activ state while running the benchmark - but the number you then get is not the raw speed of the drive.

also, what benchmark-tool did you use?

yes, I have some of the variants of the p5a-board: 1.03, 1.04, 1.06 after some hard thinking I remember that superpi _likes_ cache (on-die and 2nd-level mb-cache). so since we had to run superpi on our sis530 boards with mainboard-cache disabled this would explain why the p5a does so well with mb-ca...

moskitta75, I guess you mean geforce fx 5900 (5950), because a fx 599 does not exist ... also I would like to draw your attention to the fact that although it is possible to get a geforce card beyond modell 59xx up and running 2D on a k6 system, it is not possible to run any d3d game that needs dx8 ...

The Aladdin 5 is hard-coded to support up to 1GB of RAM on a board with four slots, anyway.

896 MB RAM (1x512, 1x256, 1x128) working in gigabyte ga-5ax

folks,

I learned today that someone over at a german forum runs win-xp on a gigabyte ga-5ax with 896 mb ram installed. how is this possible, when the ali-v chipset a) does not allow 512mb-modules and b) allows a maximum of 768mb as defined by the chipset?

he postet a screenshot here

all, I received information via pm that the proposed "leave bank #0 free" does not help to get a working sis530 system (don't know which board was used for this test) when an add-on pci video card is installed. I am sorry that I may not remember correctly in this case (time has passed sinc...

kenb, one more IMPORTANT advice which helps in cases where no jumper is available to deactivate the onboard graphics engine is to leave ram bank #0 FREE of any ram stick. that is because if one wants to use the onboard graphics device ram bank #0 MUST hold a ram stick where the chipset expects one i...

kenb, I would hesitate to say that the soyo board does the 133mhz or not. but i definitely would say that the gigabyte as well as the asus sis530 boards are capable of working at 133mhz speed without problems and I don't know where you read that a) that one has to fiddle around with electric circuit...

would it be safe to say that keeping this board at 100Mhz FSB would be better for stability's sake, if I use the built-in GPU? Another idea: Would it make sense to try 133Mhz FSB with a PCI video card installed to get the system past POST, then pull it out? The system would not have a chance to re-...
