@ Uranium235 : Plan at the moment is to buy a new bios chip preflashed to the F8 bios and try to revive one of my problem children w/ that. Reason is these boards cost me a mint, and I don't want to risk the last of the 4 until I have one of the others back up. I know about "Hotflashing",...

Sounds like a hotflash may be needed IMHO. It's easy to do but takes a little nerve. I've done it about a dozen times already. A good BIOS chip puller is nearly mandatory. Radio Shack sells them. Might be a good idea to practice on something expendable first. Make sure the notch on the BIOS chip is ...

Your board, the EP-58MVP3C-M, has 512k of L2 cache which will only cache 128MB of RAM. You are correct that 384 will be slower because of this, but uncached RAM is still faster than paging the hardrive. Maybe 256MB would be a better amount because your system consumes the uncached amount of RAM firs...

Your machine is more than capable for what you need to do with it. Just from your system specs it looks like you could use more memory. I'll bet you have little or no free memory to run anything and your machine is resorting to your hardrive virtual memory which is S-L-O-W . Check "System Infor...

I acquire most of my K6 and socket 7 hardware from Ebay but some things I've had for years. Some internet venders, but not many, still sell some K6 hardware but they're usually overpriced. You may get lucky and find some older hardware at a Computer fair or flea market.

I like to dual-boot Windows98SE and WindowsXP Pro on all my rigs. With XP I like to use 512MB of RAM and trim off some of the fluff to keep it working snappy. The Via MVP3 boards with 2MB L2 cache are my favorites to run XP on. If I'm just testing a new configuration I'll use Windows98SE because it'...

What condition are the caps in? Did you replace the CMOS battery in any of them? Sometimes removing all power and the CMOS battery for a day straightens them out.

Every Gigabyte board I've ever messed with were high-strung and uncooperative....

Voodoo 4 memory mod

This guy took a 32MB Voodoo 4 video card and attached additional RAM chips for a total of 64MB RAM.

I often wondered if it was possible to mod the L2 cache on socket 7 boards in a similar way. :)

After some hunting around I think I found the answer to the meaning of the "S4" and "S8" in the Crucial RAM part numbers: ...you can reliably tell the density from the part number. If it is CTxMy S4 Dz then it's single density (e.g. 8 chips for 128MB). If it's CTxMy S8 Dz , then ...

Here's the 256MB Crucial part number that I use, CT32M64S4D7E . Never had a problem with these in any Super7 board I've tried. http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT32M64S4D7E Here's the part number in the auction, CT32M64S8D7E . Not sure what the "S8" and "S4" re...

Let me double check the crucial part number I have when I get home from work. I can give a list of boards I've used them on if it would help. The RAM in the auction are NOT low-density modules. CT32M64S8D7E are 32Mx64. Here's a pretty good reading on density I've found: http://www.techsupportforum.c...
