hi kenb, you will find a treasure of information in the thread SiS530 @133MHz (GA-5SMM/Soyo 5SSM) setup, benching, tweaking which many folks here on this forum have produced together. it deals with sis530 chipset boards of all brands and types. My understanding is that this is one of the poorer perf...

converter: drives are recognized as ide-drives - otherwise the converter would not do its job ;) the converter also does NOT change anything regarding the size limit. in my case I used a promise-ide pci-adapter to connect the wdc6400aaks drive to the system. so it is the promise-adapter which is tak...

one last but important hint:
the sata drive must be able to communicate via sata-1 modus! most sata-2 drives do but especially in the case of ssd-disks one should be prepared that many manufacturers / models skip sata-1 support. so get sure that the drive supports sata-1 before spending the money ..

jim,
it is only the small 5.85 x 2.54 cm ciruitry board, that is to be attached to the sata-drive. it plugs directly in where the drive normally is connected to data / power cables. on the other side of the pcb you plug in power cable and ide-cable.

it is that simple.

advantages of using converters over add-on sata-pci cards are - no usage of scarce pci-slot (less energy, less heat, no system ressources used) in case of using onboard-ide controller - you can use fast bootable ide-pci addon-cards (via-based sata cards are not bootable on s7-systems; they are boota...

New Sata-Drives in a K6-System

hello everybody, hope you are all doing well, k6-comrades! I am back again at least for this post to drop some info (time has become very limited to show up more often). I upgraded my old samsung 1213n harddisk (120gb, ide), which was connected to the onboard ata-66 ide-connector (ga 5ax rev 5.2) an...

replacing the cpu did not help. changing the fsb from 100mhz to 83mhz to see what happens resulted in a failure to even boot the machine - after bios messages shown in the first seconds the system hangs before I can even choose from the os-menue. changing back to 100mhz results also in a stop right ...

the reason why I re-installed win2000 (without installing ANY os-update, or driver-software installation) is exactly because of any program/driver issue that might have found its way into the system. but this approach showed that this is not the case, so I added a win-xp installation, which (also wi...

jim,
of course I could do this (which is quite a bit of a task because I would need to remove even the power-unit to get access), but why does the cpu work even under heavy load under win98 then?
if the cpu is faulty then why does this not show under win98?

jim,
cpu does its job very well under win98, idle at 32 degrees C

kachi,
have no tool (and no knowledge) to check whether the clock generator "oscillates". but if you tell what I need and how to do I would try.
