Re: locked
You can get mobile Bartons that are unlocked, and they apparently overclock like crazy.

re: faster
Generally, the K6-III will be faster, even at 80 MHz slower speeds. The on-die L2 cache makes a big difference in many applications. It will definitely feel "snappier" in many things. Also, depending on how much RAM your motherboard L2 cache can cache, the on-die L2 cache of the K6-III can...

Re: Ti4200
Would love to give you advice on the best drivers for the Ti4200, but my experience with nvidia on super7 only goes up to a GF3, for which 12.90 was best overall, at least til I stopped trying at Detonator 3x.xx. Don't think that 12.90 supports a GF4 series card. With super7, I'd benchmark the 4x.xx...

Re: GF3
Yep, it worked great in my Epox MVP3G5. It was also natively supported by the 12.90 drivers, which were the last drivers that did really good on the MVP3 chipset. Later ones would do well in some games, but 12.90 did well in nearly all games. That said, I haven't tried drivers 40 and above with the ...

Re: old school
Cool. Glad you got it to work. It's fun to upgrade an old mobo to much better performance than was ever envisioned when it was developed. Since you're probably not going to use the mobo, maybe you won't want to do this, but there is a site (Russian) that has a bios patcher that will enable full reco...

Strange doings with account?!
Over the last several days, I noted that the time of the posts in this forum were "off" when I viewed them, i.e. they were dated in the future. Today I checked the "My Account" link and my time zone was set to GMT+6 instead of GMT-6. Also, it had my old e-mail address in it, when...

Re: L2 cache missing
That motherboard should automatically have L2 cache enabled for that processor. It's possible Aida simply was not programmed to look for cache off the processor. I don't have a K6-2 right now so I can't test it, but you could try SiSoft Sandra or CPU-Z. However, they might also not recognize the L2 ...

re: XP
It has something to do with the location of where it was installed at. There is a info in the readme about WinNT and Win2K and the requirements for directory location and registry keys and uninstalling.

Re: k6wc
I never really tried that write combine program. In order to enable/enhance write combine, I ran CPUCool which gave that option, then ran CTU after CPUCool enabled write combining and captured those settings for startup. Found out it helped with the Voodoo3/4s I used to have, but not with GeForce ty...

Re: Enable All + Functions Any Win OS
Well most of the old regulars here were around when Uart of Uart's utilities, Rob Mueller of CTU, and Kyle Brant of K6Speed fame frequented here, or in the old K6 forum at www.amdzone.com They were regulars back in the 2000/2001 timeframe when the 2+ and III+ came out and were big topics of conversa...

Re: "+" model not recognized in BIOS at startup
Hello, The non + lacks the on die L256 cache as well which is a huge difference in preformance. What the bios reads doesn't necassarily mean anything. Check it with any cupid and you'll know if your getting all the functions, caches and clock speed. Here is a good one specially for II+/III+ that ha...

Re: 3DMark
For the high scores, I run at 6x103. My high score with the 8500 is 3660. The TX97-XE still runs nice, but I keep the CPU at 450. It runs all day at 500, but there were occasional unexplained HD corruption problems at 83 MHz FSB. So I clocked it down. I still play HL, Q2 and their single player mods...

Re: games and stuff
I put the 9500Pro in my Epox and got about 4200 in 3DMark2001. 3DMark2003 wouldn't complete.

Re: Linux
Sure, there was quite a bit of talk a while back about people experimenting with Linux on their K6 systems. I was running RH9 on mine in dual boot with Win2K, and it ran fine, but when I went to a wireless NIC, it didn't have support for it. I'm sure there's a way around it, but I haven't worked too...
