RE: SETI@home MMX-optimized application on a K6-2+

Dunno' after SETI classic closed down... I lost my account (due to changing email addresses etc.) so I found myself not bothering. :( As far as stability goes... you're not overclocking your K6 processor are you? as you may already know, many if not most DC projects can be sensitive to 'out-of-spec'...

Sadly I killed a K62-533 running it above 2.5v 24/7  IMHO the best performance gain was achieved when I popped the IHS, allowing for an achievable/stable 600Mhz (6 x 100), however this lasted for 6 months before I needed to up the voltage r/t stability which eventually damaged the VIA chipset (...

I concur with Jim... and I seriously wouldn't use anything less than a high end (Athlon) socketA heatsink ;)

Additionally a 7v modded fan would be quiet and have improved airflow, especially when compared to no fan @ all :)

One thing I have decided for sure; SP3 is never going to be a "Plexiglass Window" machine. Way too crowded inside, - looks like an electronics scrapyard. Photos to follow. Well... I must say that is a real shame considering all the modding/hard work you've put in :( given the multitude of...

I've got a Netvista with that PSU (exhaust) setup too halfpennies , can't say I like it too much... I may end up modding the empty cavity (top of case) to fit a generic mATX PSU ;) Yeah those EL-cheapo 40 core IDE leads certainly wouldn't support ATA66+ speeds, thus the new HDD would be running well...

EDIT : If you do decide to stick with your K6-2, follow Tazwegion's advice. He is an expert on how to get the most out of one of them. Thanks for the vote of confidence Jim :D unfortunately many of the propriety systems I've encountered lately have skimped on such things as case fans and/or quality...

Welcome to the forums! :D Additional modifications/performance enhancements also worth doing are as follows... * Ensure (in device manager) that HDD's have DMA (transfer rate) enabled in properties * Replace older 40 strand IDE with 80 strand IDE cables * Strip down heatsink and/or clean whilst insi...

It's been a little while since I tested any RAM modules, but Memtest86+ provides information r/t motherboard chipset, processor & memory etc. worth a look in perhaps? Additionally... I have a matched pair of AOpen 64Mb SDram sticks (PC100) which ran flawlessly @ 133Mhz in an old Soltek Skt. A I ...

RE: Best Videocard for a Socket A

I was gonna' suggest a 9600XT or 9800pro, but I like the X800GTO even better! :D

Glad you found your way here a_tewinkel ;) Jim has the largest collection of Ali V chipset motherboards of anyone I know, I'm a VIA MVP3 enthusiast! *ponders* I wonder if any clever individual ever devised a Vmod for the GA-5AX to sufficiently power a TNT2? 8o Originally by Dasman2 [/i] I ...

Hmmmm... a dual K6x motherboard would've been nice, with DDR support even nicer! :D

Alas, it wasn't to be... so we make do with what we have, or move on (and upgrade) :(

Re: Gigabyte GA-586-TX-2

Back to the Gigabyte GA-586-TX-2. The CPU speed is set with jumpers, if I update the bios how can I set the speed for the K6-2 400/500 chips. I have a good board and would like to see if I can upgrade it. Thanks Mike... Unfortunately... the GA-586TX2 is powered by the 430TX chipset, which is only c...

RE: ATX Form Card

Thanks Mike , I'd never encountered such a connector bracket before, as for the GA-586TX2 (I also had one) luckily mine came with a P/S2 PCI card extension... so I never had to reverse engineer the header ;) Hmmmm... I may inquire if the person who recieved the '586TX2 would like an upgrade, I could...
