Buying a used system, is this one worth it?

Post by His Royal Majesty King V »

All,

Ok, I'm asking for a decision based on incomplete info....

A friend is getting a new computer, and will be getting rid of his old system, a 1.4GHz Celeron, if I recall right.

The only info I really have on it is the processor and that it's got a 40GB Western Digital hard drive that he put in, I think a year ago.

He wants $100 for it. Is it worth buying? I don't know anything about the motherboard, video, RAM or whatever, yet.

Or at the very least, is it worth considering?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good deal to me. It's probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. I'd go for it so long as you know it's in working condition.

I'm with Nohr on this. Excellent deal, if in good working condition.

Those Tualatin Celerons were the "Celeron done right". I have one in my work PC, an upgrade from a P3-600. Good upgrade.

Thanks for the FAST replies...

Thus far the only thing I'm worried about is whether it's got one of those boards with integrated graphics that does NOT have an AGP slot, though I don't know if those were in much use by the time the Celeron 1.4 was out...

Oh, and I do hope it's full ATX! :) But for the price, I'm not going to complain about much . . unless it's only got like 1 or 2 expansion slots or something.

Yes, that is a very good deal. A 1.4 GHz Celeron is actually a Tualatin Pentium III on a 100 MHz bus. It has the full 256K L2 cache of a real Pentium III. Still a very capable computer, easily worth $100.
