[WTB] replacement micro-ATX MoBo for K6-2+

Post by Ninho »

Hullo there, K-sixers !

The MoBo in my old faithful Aptiva 2170 died a moment away - well, a few months away to be sure. That was the V75-M (Acer), micro-ATX super-7. I've been looking for a replacement MoBo (same format, same or different manufacturer. Must "take" the K6-2 "plus") to no avail.

I'm located in France and willing to consider any reasonable offer, this may include international shipping.

Greetings Nihno,

I too had this very issue with an IBM Aptiva 2187 series system, the motherboard in my case uATX was an IBM263pro, which for all intensive purposes would also fit your system and support K6x processors. I was unfortunately unlucky in my endeavour to find a replacement and instead purchased a pre-loved uATX/Duron combo which allowed for the reuse of all the system components except the K62 processor :(

If you were able to locate such a motherboard (uATX SS7)... I would suggest you'd find it at eBay International, as they're the most likely source ;)

Failing this a case change and an upgrade to a full AT/ATX form factor would be you're next best option...

For what it is worth, I once upgraded an Aptiva for a guy who wanted an AGP slot when his Aptiva didn't have one. Used a QDI Advance 3 board. Had to change the com port plate to the one that came w/ the QDI; but that was the only change needed.

Thank you guys. I've been looking on e-bay.france, you are right I might expand my watch to e-bay international. Then, I am thinking aloud here, shouldn't I look for any ATX SS7 board (non micro) for my K6 ? What is the approx entry point for a new ATX case ?

@Jim : are you saying that particular board is still made/available from resellers ?

Ninho, about 3 years ago, I bought a 4 ton truckload of end of line stock that QDI was throwing out. (Sold most of it since). Probably most ATX Baby board Super 7s would fit your case, if they come w/ the matching com port plate.

Do you still have some and would you consider shipping one to me ?
The IBM case is so engineered it can't take something larger than microATX (~9.5x9.5"). Regarding the back-plate, the layout of ports is non standard I think, so I'd need the assorted backplate with the MoBo.

You (or anybody for that matter) are welcome to discuss details by either private messaging on this board or email (address given earlier in this thread).

Cheers

I sold all the ATX stuff I had, what little I have left is just ATs, (because I don't build ATXs); but there is a local store I could check that might have something that would work.

I do have a number of QDI ATX com port plates though, so if they are standard, at least I can supply that for sure.

You may want to purchase closer to France simply because of the shipping costs and time.

M-ATX socket 7 motherboard that takes a K6-2 /III "+" cpu ....hmm does it need to have a AGP port ?

Are you willing to spend more than 25 euros to receive the motherboard ...if so you should find one :)

Hello DasMan2, well I'd thought about 15/20 euros max, but 25 including fare will be acceptable for a guaranteed working product - I know and you know 't returning is not a real possibility it if something is broken. Out of curiosity, how much does it cost to ship to France from where you are ? A microATX could be sent in a robust envelope as a "letter" rather than a packet, and maybe cheaper, unless it violates some regulation... Of course then I suppose there is the question of weight.

" does it need to have a AGP port ? " Nope, not wanted, but video integrated with chipset (and a VGA output) preferred.

Cheers

@Ninho

Have just read the thread. I have a micro-atx Gigabyte GA5-SMM motherboard that will take a K6+ cpu no problem at all. I have had a K6+ cpu running on this board at 133fsb using the 4x divider which of course means the pci and agp bus are not overclocked. I might even consider selling it to you, but you might find something suitable off the UK Ebay site. This gigabyte board has an SIS530 chipset with integrated VGA and sound. Supports voltages from 1.3v to 3.2v and fsb 66Mhz up to 133Mhz. It has 3pci slots and one isa slot. Will support up to 3x256mb memory. I am in the UK.

Stedman.

@Stedman5040

Nice ! The GA-5SMM is indeed one of the models I had googled out that should suit my needs.

>running on this board at 133fsb using the 4x divider which of course means the pci and agp bus are not overclocked.

Sure. And it's based on the SiS 530 which I have experience with, since my broken board had that very same chipset - but not the 133 MHz option, or rather not the /4 divisor. I used to run the K6+ at 5x112, might try 4x133 or even 4.5x133 ...

Possibly a little problem : the backplate I have on the IBM case (w/ opening for COM ports, etc.) is non standard, so that I'd need your metal plate along with the board, if possible.

> I might even consider selling it to you...

Damn, a considerable offer !

> I am in the UK.

Which of course makes it much easier to finalise than dealing with the US.
I'm on the coast of Brittany BTW, just down the Channel...

Shall we discuss a deal by PM ?

Mighty nice of you to help the guy out Stedman! :D

For the record, my failed board is/was IBM Aptiva 2170-23G, MoBo model(ACER) V75-M IIRC.
