Just yesterday upgraded to a Radeon LE from a tnt2-ultra and I'm very happy with it. I've overclocked it from 148 to 185 mhz so far without a hitch. I'm going to add some home made ramsinks and a fan to the chips heatsink before pushing her on up. Also enabled hyperz for d3d in the registry.

I feel kinda guilty now. I built a new system for my bro about 6 weeks ago and installed a $130 retail Radeon DDR (183 mhz) in it and I now have my $74 board running at the same speed and performance level. However, I haven't overclocked his just yet so don't know what his ceiling will be.

All in all, a nice upgrade and the last video card for my k6-III+ system.

monaro327,

The LE is DDR also. It's simply a crippled Radeon 32 MB DDR. It's easy to overclock it to 166 mhz which is the OEM DDR speed, and lots of people can overclcock it to the retail DDR speed of 183 mhz. By enabling HyperZ, along with the overclocking, there should be little/no difference in performance between the two. Whereas the GeForce will show the DDR speed in programs like Powerstrip (2*183=366 for a GF2 GTS), for whatever reason, the Radeon DDR will show the 183. Not sure how the overclocking programs read that (BIOS read?).

georgep1 is right monaro327

the primary difference is his board has 5.5 ns ram whereas mine is spec'ed as 6 ns ram. Therefore, he should be able to overclock higher than mine. By the way I pushed it up to 190 mhz this morning before heading for work with no problem. Going higher this evening and this is still without a fan on the heatsink or the ramsinks installed.

Although I'm no big fan of anandtech, he had an article up on his website about this very thing that convinced me to go this route.

And no iblue, im not just brew it. sorry

I've had a mess of them in my K6-III+ box. I just dropped in a Kyro I and it works very well.

Anyway, it's used the following cards, with their maximum stable clockrates listed:
* ATI Mach32 ISA w/tv out, circa 1993. I used this when I first built it, then moved on to:
* ATI RageProTurbo 4+4, 103/103
* 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 202/202
* 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 188/188 (died when a fan stalled) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">
* GeForce 2 MX200 205/220
* PowerColor Evil Kyro 64 MB 120/120

Now all I need to try is a Radeon and a GeForce3.

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

No problem monaro, we're all here to learn right?

I've learned a damn lot in the last 8 months from the k6 forum at amdzone and now here. Usually just keep my mouth (or fingers) shut due to my lack of knowledge on a lot of the discussions.

Using a 32 mb PCI Diamond Stealth III S540 video card, as I have it running with stability finally, probably won't ever change it out.

Why not use a Banshee? It has enough power for a K6-3 450, and not too much like the newer cards. They're really trouble-free, very compatible, and great for glide games. My Banshee was the first 3dcard I had, and I still like it a lot.

BTW Nohr, you must be my doppelganger. We both have Banshees. We both have a K6-3+ 450@550 residing on an AOpen AX59Pro. And we both like Diablo2. Hehehe!
