I saw this over at www.slashdot.org

Quote:
AMD Announces A Shift In Focus From PC Processors

AMDPosted by timothy on Sunday November 24, @01:53AM

from the but-but-but dept.

slughead writes "Forbes Magazine is reporting that AMD will no longer compete with Intel to make faster, smaller, and more efficient processors. Just as Mac users would be worse off if Windows didn't exist, Intel users will be much worse now that AMD will no longer compete. You see, there's this thing called demand, and when there are no competing products in a market, a good or service will always increase the price to the economic equilibrium, unless forced not to by the state (forget that right now, communists!!). In English: you're going to get less new technology, and higher prices on existing technology." On the other hand, AMD is definitely not exiting the chip business -- they're just trying to branch out from chips for microcomputers.

If this is indeed the case... well I say it bites! Granted, Athys are plenty fast, but this means the high-end bleeding edge users will soon be stuck with Intel-only solutions!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... rtoastz>Mr Toastz at: 11/24/02 3:19:15 pm

Yeah, I saw this early today at the MadOnion forums. If it's true it sucks. The people at MadOnion are already doing polls on which company should take over AMD. So far Nvidia and MS are in the lead.

Do you get it?

I think you guys are missing the point. They are not dropping out.

They are re-focussing.

I think that the real idea is that they have one in the bank with hammer. So they are not concerned about clock speed and the like. From that side of things they are doing the same with their banana chips.

If you are working in the office you would be hard pressed telling the speed difference between MS word on a K6-3 or the latest Athy. I think that they all realise this. Gaming of course is totally different. Speed rules. But clock speed alone is not going to get you there.

AMD are broadening out. Intel is already pretty broad, but there are new markets and AMD is looking to win those first.

If you read anything about AMD they do not plan on pulling back, but rather expanding. Of course the economy is a spanner in the works, but it's a large spanner and is affecting all companies. So even though AMD is cutting staff, that's not to say that they won't be putting them on in the not too distant future.

I suggest that you re-think. Don't pull the plug on them yet. I see a resurgence late in 1st quater next year.

Heck I have even been considering buy AMD stock for this reason.

Judging by K6-3+ prices...

Post by feizex »

Maybe AMD should get a bit nostalgic and release a low power consumption K6-3 (with athy enhancements) @ 1GHz with remapped multipliers for 66 to 100MHZ fsb.

Seems there are still alot of socket-7 mobos about with people that don't want to pay for a full system but may consider a CPU upgrade.

Im sure if AMD built low power low heat k6-III+ built into super small socket7 mobos with built in everything they would sell very well.
Im also sure that a k6-III at .13u would clock upto at least 700mhz and with the extra metel layer who knows :P
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
athlon XP 1.4ghz@1.85ghz(11.5x160)
Iwill KK266plus
256mb Ram@160mhz
4.1 home made sound system
Radeon 8500 310/350
20GB/20GB/10GB 7200rpm ata100 harddrives(western digital)
Windows XP pro
Yamaha 16x10x40 burner
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 OEM

AMD is not going anywhere... quote from here

<a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/021125/flash_me ...

"Flash memory makes up as much as 30 percent of AMD's total revenue. This is why I'm bothered...

Post by Mr Toastz »

I should be considered a 'bleeding edge' solutions user. If you've ever had to rasterize a 1270 DPI document, you know this can take a while. Even our dual 800 Macs here at work choke on that for about a half hour...

The current AMD solutions would cut that time by about half, but note that we are still talking 15 minutes of down time while that operation is being completed.

The nice thing up to now has been watching Intel and AMD go neck and neck in the speed/price war. Well, if AMD bows out now, there won't be anything stopping Intel from doubling the price of their CPU's, and they will no longer feel the pressure to get stuff out quickly. Anyone remember how slowly the CPU speeds were increasing as recently as the Pentium 1 days? Remember that it was AMD offering us the faster soluitons back then, while Intel was focusing on new architecture. And before AMD was a major factor, well advances were few and far between back then.

I agree that even our trusty K6 systems are overkill for a lot of 'mundane uses' (web browsing, word processing, etc.), so a lot of people are now extremely spoiled with the current solutions.

But, the MHz wars have done a lot of nice things for us professionals that can still bring computer systems to their knees, and regularly do. Even Apple has had to at least try to increase their speeds (their dependence on Motorola has hurt them dearly I think).

It is too bad that the extended economic slump has forced AMD to pull back, and I don't think we will see them charging boldly ahead again anytime soon. I really do hope that their efforts in other areas (flash memory, etd.) help them retain a strong foothold, so that they may again slap Intel silly once the giant becomes complacent again...

I think there just doing this so no one expects anything from them so they can focus on whats needed, Hammer and Barton.
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
athlon XP 1.4ghz@1.85ghz(11.5x160)
Iwill KK266plus
256mb Ram@160mhz
4.1 home made sound system
Radeon 8500 310/350
20GB/20GB/10GB 7200rpm ata100 harddrives(western digital)
Windows XP pro
Yamaha 16x10x40 burner
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 OEM

I thought about it.

And what better way to make intel become complacent than giving them the impression that you are bowing out?

Which BTW they never said.

No, intel have not escaped yet.

If what that article said were true, why is AMD pushing to get the Hammer out the door? I mean, the Hammer is obviously a chip designed to compete with Intel in the high-end market, is it not?

Besides, if they ever really did bow out of the market, someone else would step in. VIA might just hire all of AMD's engineers and create a real performance CPU to complement their C3 chips.

Apple is getting a lot of their PPC chips from IBM these days, not from Motorola. The second-generation G3 (PPC750FX) that powers a lot of their laptops is a pure IBM design. Motorola provides the G4s, which use their proprietary AltiVec instructions.

FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)
