Radeon 8500/9100 in Socket 7

Post by pedrogad »

There's been a lot of talk of Radeons in Socket 7 on this site and also AMDzone, and I would welcome comments on any specific successes or problems with Gigabyte ga-5aa or ga-5ax motherboards?

I've mainly gone the Nvidia route in the past, and have been pleased with my GF2ti. I'm some way off ditching this K6/3+550 system, and was wondering if a Radeon 8500 (called 9100 now) was a better upgrade than say a GF3/GF3Ti500/GF3Ti200? The re-labelled "9100" is likely to be the cheapest option too in the U.K., and there will soon be a lot available.

Are the Radeons less power hungry? My AGP slot is the old AGP 1.0 spec, but runs the GF2Ti perfectly. The GF3 variants must suck more power than my current GF2Ti card, but what about the Radeons? Any compatibility issues with the ATI's? Are they 1.5v cards, and if so are they ok in the old 3.3v slots? ATI say they are compatible with K6 systems, unless they are thinking of PCI slots!

I tried a GF4MX440 a while ago, but the later drivers were crap in this SS7 system, but if there are not likely to be any disaster areas with the Radeons, then I am tempted to give one a go. Any advice would be gratefully received.

hi pedro,

i use an aiw8500dv in my epox g5 with a k6-iii+ 450mhz running xp pro. i am using the cat 3.1s with dx 8.2, and i get fairly smooth gameplay in both directx and opengl. i did have the dreadded stuttering issue in directx, but i have solved it by doing a clean install of the os, os updates and latest drivers. most of the radeons are agp 1.0 compatible, heck ati even lists the 9700 as compatible with the k6, which i am getting for this system (epox g5) and see how it performs. i'll be putting my aiw8500dv in my gigabyte ga5ax with a k6-2+ and xp pro, so i'll be doing some testing with that combo.

btw. only use win 2k or xp, since the win9x cores (including ME) doesnt enable agp acceleration with the radeon 9x drivers.

Steve

Radeon 8500/9100 in Socket 7

Post by pedrogad »

Many thanks for your comments, guys. Seems like the agp 1.0 spec is no problem, but I'm wondering about Sandells' comment about the operating system. I'm currently on W98SE and have an upgrade disk for ME. Is the agp acceleration thing a problem, unless you use W2k or XP?

The Radeon "9X" drivers? The card I'm thinking of is really an 8500, albeit renamed 9100, but still only supports Direct X 8.1 or so, and not Direct X 9.0+ like the proper Radeon 9000 -series. Cake4One, what os are you using with your ga-5ax board?

See

<a href="http://pub70.ezboard.com/fk6plus67153fr ...

for a comparison. That was with the MVP3 motherboard, but I believe it applies to Aladdin5 as well. Don't think the latest drivers fix the performance probems in Win9x/ME but I'm not sure.

Radeon 8500/9100 in Socket 7

Post by pedrogad »

Thanks for you input, much appreciated. I've now got my 9100 to replace the trusty GF2Ti, but what God-awful problems! Firstly the Radeon drivers didn't want to install, but eventually got to try a couple of drivers: off the Sapphire CD and also some later 3.1's. 3D2001 kept cutting back to desktop, and the sound wouldn't work in mp3's etc. Hmm. I did notice that the Radeon drivers override the Ali AGP Control Center's GAT Mode settings, which like to run at "1" (or "0"), but not the Radeon's apparent default setting of "2".....my GA-5aa has never liked the "2" setting for long. Bummer.

Don't know if there's a workaround anywhere? Don't laugh, ibLuE, but I'm still on W98SE! Cake4one....does your 8500 override your AGP Control Center GAT settings? As for the sound prob too...and the general trouble getting the Radeon drivers to eventually install, well I'm a bit buggered on these problems! For now I've swapped back to the GF2Ti card and cleared out as much ATI stuff as I can find!

Any help would be gratefully received!

man I have never heard of that many problems with a radeon
try downloading ATIs drivers(from ATI) and what ever you do make sure your old drivers are 100% uninstalled
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVVV
Athlon XP 1600+@1.82ghz(9x202) V Duron 1.1ghz V pentium 2 350@490
Crucial PC2700 Cas2.5 fastest settings v 384mb pc133 ram V 256mb pc133
Epox 8k9a2+(kt400) V iwill KK266+ V Asus P2B
Radeon 8500@280/340 V matrox g400 V matrox G400
Sound Blaster Live V 20gigs V IBM 13gb
2xWD 20gb 7200 RPM raid 0 setup V 16x10x32 Samsung V Windows XP
1xWD 20gb 7200 RPM V windows XP V No sound
16x10x40 Yamaha burner V 5.1 onboard soundV 32x cd rom
52x Asus CD-ROM V 3com NIC V 3com NIC
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvVVVVVVVVVVVV

The drivers you downloaded from ATI were from the "Powered by ATI", not "Build by ATI" section, right? Since it's a Sapphire card, it should be powered.

Next step would be a clean install, but I know that's kinda drastic. Good luck.

Cake,

Where does your 03 crash. Mine does it during the CPU test, every time. I noted at madonion that no K6-x score has been published for 03. Must be a CPU thing.

Re the crashes in 3d2001, they happen at the nature stage, but haven't tried any later 3d2xxx versions.

I did use the Sapphire installation cd at one point, and eventually got the drivers in, but once removed they didn't want to install a second time. Did notice a bit of software in one of the drivers called "Smartgart", but the shortcut wouldn't open up. Apparently ATI uses this Smartgart thingy to establish the ultimate AGP settings that your system can take? If so, it needs some user control and discretion, and the ability to override it? I'll give it all another try sometime. One of my sons has a ga-5ax setup, and his system runs light (no internet, printer, scanner etc), so I might format his first!
