Radeon 9100 update

Post by bronx69 »

maybe this will work. when I tried to install
my GF4 Ti4600 in my DFI K6BV3+ /66 with WIN 98 first addition it wouldn't even boot into windows.

I tried all kinds of drivers and finally was able to get the system to boot when I removed the VIA Drivers. IM still using AGP drivers but they are ones that are built into Windows 98.

still I had to look for decent Drivers and it was difficult to get a score of 3000 in 3DMARK 2001.

I have had a noticeable difference in system slow downs and shutters compaired to my Ge force 2MX but i cant really say that theirs all that much of a differnce compaired to a Geforce 3 Ti200 i once tryed.

Radeon 9100

Post by pedrogad »

Still no joy since starting this thread. My Radeon is however still running well in one of my kids' systems, which has the ATX version of my GA-5AA motherboard. It's still a mystery why the 9100 locks up in my system, because in many ways the two computers are so similar.

To console me I've acquired a cheapish Geforce 3 card, and this runs a treat in my setup. No lockups, power issues or anything (-so far!). I originally suspected that my 200w psu was one possible cause why the Radeon didn't work properly, but the GF3 isn't complaining. With the GF3 overclocking to 240/500 (must have a good card?) and the K6-3+/550 at 600, I can get 3162 points in 3D2001 (12.90 drivers), so all seems well with the Nvidia setup. I don't like pushing my luck with an old system though, so I usually keep the GF3 and the processor at default speeds.

I'm still bugged by the Rad probs however, and will give it another try sometime. The 9100 has been as good as gold in a GA-5AX system (K6-2+/550 with 192mb ram), so why not in a GA-5AA (K6-3+/550 with 224mb ram). The only real differences between the two computers are the psu's....mine is only 200w, whereas the kid's is 300w. Yet the GF3 doesn't mind my poxy power supply. Oh and I'm running W98SE against ME in the other computer.

Dude, I would almost bet for sure it was the power supply. The 9700 is such a power hog, it has it's own power connector. Running the + chip and the 9700 on a 200watt ps is suicide! Considering it takes all of about 15 min to swap a power supply, give that a shake and see if it'll behave. Hell, I'm sweating a build using a 230watt for an Nforce2 board IGP and a Duron 750. :)

Guest, you're probably right, 200w is pretty weedy. I've got a 300w AT psu on its way through Ebay U.K., and I'll give the Rad another go sometime. It's only a 9100 though (sort of an 8500LE) and not the fully blown 9700, which is a guzzler. In the meantime a GF3 is working pretty well, so if the Radeon 9100 doesn't work out, I'll be more than happy to keep the GF3.

It would be interesting to know the relative power usage of various graphics cards. There was a thread some time ago, either here or on amdzone which gave the wattages, but this was a while ago and before the later Radeons came out.

more info on my 9700 xp lock up problem

Post by Sandells »

hi guys,

after trying several different things ive come to this conclusion:-

after ive freshly installed the cat 2.3 -> 3.2, i can play any D3D/OGL game until i reboot, then i get lockups each time. although the cats 2.3 will take longer to lock the system up.

also ive observed my smartgart settings and on my AIW8500DV they were like this:-

Smartgart settings:

PCI Write ON
PCI Read ON

AGP Write OFF
AGP Read ON

AGP Fastwrite OFF
x2 AGP

but after installing the 9700, theyve become:-

Smartgart settings:

PCI Write ON
PCI Read ON

AGP Write ON
AGP Read ON

AGP Fastwrite OFF
x2 AGP

i think this is where my problem is with the AGP settings. even without smartgart installed, i think the cat xp driver is trying to force everything on, on my 9700.
