custom made ss7 motherboards
custom made ss7 motherboards
hi all,

this is just an idea i had, but i don't know if this has been discussed before elsewhere on the net. supposing IF there was a company or privaate electronics co. that made custom designed motherboards, e.g. the consumer chooses the socket type, chipset, memory slots, number of card slots, etc. i'd like to see the k6+ cpu's on a more modem chipset like with ddr memory, agp x4 or x8, built in raid on the motherboard, etc. id be willing for someone to do that and id pay for it, to have an unique ss7 pc.

anybody else like this idea? remember it's just an idea i had, probably a mad one i know <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Steve

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... andells at: 3/19/03 12:37:18 pm

mobos
there are companys that will make the pcb for you if you supply them with the chips and a detailed design but you better have some skillz becuase finding the chips and other parts would be hard nowadays and its not easy to make a mobo.

if you where going to make a mobo what would be nice is an mvp4 with an agp slot, 6 pci, 1/6 divider and a nice power module on the board.

Re: mobos
I agree blue, you can get the Socket 7 cpu holder in online stores. An ideal SS7 mobo would be:-

VIA MVP4 chipset or a newer one
an AGP x4/x8 slot or PCI-X
4 DDR slots
6 PCI
Intergrated 6.1 sound with Dolby Surround support
Intergrated LAN/Modem
2x USB 2.0 ports and 2x Firewire ports
FSB up to 200MHz, since this is what the K6 needs
Multipliers up to 18x or more

That would be my dream SS7 Motherboard.

This thread is also being discussed on the AMDZone K6-X forum.

Steve

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... andells at: 3/20/03 7:27:11 am

I'd like to see a dual cpu mobo <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
ie a proper APIC on the mobo.
------------------------------[ my rig ]------------------------------
K6-3+ 450@577 (115 x 5), Gigabyte GA-5AX rev5.2
386 MB generic RAM
15 GB Quantum Fireball LCT + 60 GB Seagate Barracuda IV
Radeon 8500LE @ 294/326 MHz (core/mem)
SB Live! hmm
I don't think chipsets are standerd meaning you cant just use a kt400 or nforce2 with a socket7 becuase they are made for the socketA and will not work.
the mvp4 or and ali 7(or some number) would be fine for a k6 the problem is they never included an agp slot becuase it has built in video.

S370 is given extended life.....why not SS7 as well???
See here........

Via could do the same for us SS7 users........ Give us a 200FSB or greater

The bus protocols of Socket 7 and Socket 370 chips are quite a bit different; it's not impossible to adapt one to another, but it's not cost-effective. PowerLeap considered this when they were making an upgrade for the Pentium Pro, creating an adapter that would allow K6-III to run on an Intel 440FX chipset (K6-III, with its fast on-chip cache, would have made a good low-end server CPU). But it was easier just to stick with the GTL+ protocol and use a Celeron for the adapter, so they did that instead.
Unless you're doing something that hits the FPU hard, K6-III+ 550 is much faster than Celeron 566, with its slug-like 66 MHz FSB and smaller caches. I have a III+ at 550 here and a Celeron 667 at work; I can still use the III+ without complaint, but I'd like to shoot that crappy Celeron box. The only thing it's good for is SETI.
