Mandrake Linux 9.0 and mouse trouble... CAUSE FOUND
If anyone's got familiarity with this OS or linux in general and can help, take a look at my thread over <a href="http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... .

EDIT: Ok, this is what I found out as the cause of the trouble... why, I still don't know!

It appears that if I set up both of my ethernet cards in Linux, it somehow kills the mouse!
Did a reinstall, the mouse worked. Decided not to install any software packages, but then used drakconf (text mode) to set up the two network cards.

Next bootup, mouse was dead!

Reinstalled again, this time with a strong suspicion of what might be happening. Installed one or two software packages, went into X, no problems.

Reboot, no problems.

Setup my first ethernet card (which goes out to my cablemodem). No problems. Reboot, no problems!
I'm nearly positive that if I set up my 2nd ethernet card, it will nuke the mouse upon the next bootup. Particularly since, with my first attempt with installation, I didn't set up the 2nd ethernet card for several days. Not so with my subsequent installations!

Anyway, so it's my FIC board, with a PS/2 mouse, an SMC EtherEZ ISA card for the cablemodem (smc-ultra driver), and the NIC I'm afraid to setup now is a RealTek 8019LT ISA (uses ne1000/2000 ISA driver)

Hmph . . and I couldn't use the SMC in combo with any of my lot of 3Com 509 ISA cards because somehow that combination would bugger up file-sharing in Windows.

Now I guess I just have to figure if it's drakconf that screws things up when it sets up multiple ethernet cards, or if somehow it's the ne1000/2000 driver that buggers up the mouse, or just the combination of those particular NIC models with a PS/2 mouse.

Weird......
--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/bk6plus67153.s ... ykingv>His Royal Majesty King V at: 2/27/03 12:46:39 am

Re: IRQ
Strange thing is that Windows has no problems whatsoever with this setup!!

Anyway, on the Linux boards, it was suggested that maybe the drakconf setup software might not be all it's cracked up to be.

So with the SMC card and everything else already set up, I was told to try first doing:
modprobe ne

followed by
ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.1

This seemed to work fine, and since my LAN wasn't set up, all I could really do was ping 192.168.0.1 which was successful.

Of course, it doesn't automatically start the card on bootup, so I guess I'll have to figure out how edit things so that it does. But not until I've moved to the house, got the LAN set up, and tested whether I can send/receive traffic through 192.168.0.1

Weird though...
--------------------
FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-2+ 450 @ 500 1.9V

FIC PA-2013 2.0 E-O036, K6-III 450AFX @ 500 2.2V

Acer Quasi-proprietary Mid-Tower with P-II 266

I've given up on Linux for a while. I'm gonna let it ripen for another year before I delve back into it.

My latest Operating System pursuit?

PPC2002!!!!!

<a href="http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/products/ ...
