Low-level format utilities/HDD checker, recommendations?
Preferably free, of course.....

My issue is an older 4.3GB Maxtor HDD . . DOS format utility claims it's got a bunch of bad sectors on it . . but I've heard rumors that sometimes the MS format utilities just don't try very hard.

I'd like to start off by doing a low-level format, fdisk, then format again . . and if that doesn't work I'd heard (from a Seagate tech) that there are other utilities out there that will go through and make sure of whether or not sectors/clusters/whatever are really good or bad before writing them off as hopeless.

Guidance anyone? I know the drive isn't much, but it's some free storage, and having it on an older computer would be pretty convenient.

FIC PA-2013 rev 2.1, K6-III+ 450 @ 600 2.0V
Asus SP97-V, K6-III 333 @ 366 2.2V
M-Tech M549, K6-2 400
Others doing a parts-shuffle
