IRC Chat a no go...

Post by Yahuli » Tue Jul 29, 2008 11:32 pm

It has been down quite a few hours now, at least since mid-afternoon EDT. I'd also seen it happen for minutes at a time since this past Saturday.

I know that I'm a lowly user, but I think it is safe to say that Dixiesys isn't very reliable anymore. Because of this, I think that it may be time to either find another IRC server that doesn't have a network attachment to others globally, or else one of us run our own- which is extremely easy and requires little technical knowledge and/or experience.
Besides, I personally enjoy having my chat fix.

At any rate *ahem*, yes- it does appear that irc.dixiesys is down *again* from my end of things (their web services are up and running normally, however). At least, I can't ping irc.dixiesys.net from my location at this time. Which means...

K6Plus Chat is once again currently down- seemingly.

Thanks,
--Andy

Yeah it's been down since 2pm this afternoon for me. Don't know what's going on. I think everyone is gonna have to get together and choose a new IRC network with some redundancy.

I don't think any of our home connections are reliable enough to host our own chat server.

I agree, our home connections are probably far less reliable than what we're using now.

I sent an email to you earlier, Nohr. There's a hosting solution that appears to be very decent and only costs $6/mo for up to 125 users at once. At that price, even I am willing to pitch in. They also give some disk space (I assume mainly used for hosting a small web site)- 500MB. So, it's very inexpensive, plus this place does nothing but host this sort of stuff. Plus, if no one cares about a specific domain address, people could log in to (for example) k6plus.the-irc.org with a separate client, and the flash-based one here could be modified (of course). Using the sub-domain addy on their system is free.

It seems like a really good deal to me.

we can register a room for free on damn near any of the big irc networks.

efnet or dal or something

they have multiple servers across the world that we can connect to which can lead to netsplits but thats not a big issue.

and better uptime than dixiesys pretty much guaranteed

Yeah, I'm aware of that. It's just that I've been under the impression that we were staying away from the larger networks (something Nohr (I think, at least) said to me some while back).

Anyway, I guess it's up to you guys to make that decision. I was only making a suggestion.

Laters,

irc.dixiesys.net is now back up- for the time being. :)
