Enough already! Let's replace the chat software!!!

Hey all!

I have requested several times over the last six months that we find different chat software for this site. Several people have complained at various times about not being able to enter the chat room. Some may not make it in at all and give up from frustration, and thus are never able to chat with us.

Well, tonight despite several attempts to log into chat, the longest I could hold a connection was 2 minutes. I was even informed that I was banned, which is just silly. And yes, I realize that the server I use is a small part of the problem, but seeing I am not the only one having issues, my point stands.

So, here's the deal. it is time to find a better option for chat software. Anyone with suggestions kindly post in this thread.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/umrtoastz.show ... uage=EN>Mr Toastz at: 12/14/01 12:06:18 am

Some criteria to keep in mind for new chat software

May I humbly suggest when looking at various chat software packages, that you keep the following guidelines in mind...

1) Everyone should be able to use it without having to install any software.

2) should work well with all major browsers

3) free or very inexpensive

4) needs to be able to support up to a dozen or more users at one time

5) Shirlbot should be compatable with the new chat software (request more than a requirement)

Things that might be a nice addition to what we have now, but not required-

1) emoticons
2) can't think of anything else at the moment

I'm looking as well. For ShirlBot to work it will need to be IRC based.

Something to try. It's a free java applet which connects to an irc server. It has smilies and text colors. ShirlBot and Trillian users will be able to connect to it just fine and chat with the Java applet users. It does have a banner ad though, but I suppose that comes with the territory. A more worrisome problem is that it's rather slow to connect, somewhere in the realm of a half minute or more. It appears they've had recent server problems of some sort, so maybe this is just temporary.

Anyway, try it out and give me feedback. And like I said, it's slow to connect (at the moment at least) so be a little patient.

no ...

Hey!

I'm a little cooler now, but we really need to resolve this as it is a major weak point of our site

The chat room you came up with Nohr looks nice but would not connect for me. Anyone else have any luck with it?

I like the fact that this site has reviews for the various chat room software packages.

I've been looking for hours trying to find something that is Java based and will let IRC clients connect. Everything I've found will not let IRC clients connect, or it is very slow to connect. The ChattersOnline thing from the link in my previous post is the best I've found so far, and that's not saying a whole lot. If it connected faster it'd probably be an okay replacement.

Who else has had problems with the QuickChat software we're currently using? I don't recall numerous complaints, but I have a bad memory. The software can't be that bad if a place like Lockergnome uses it.
w ...

I'm getting sorta tired of looking and finding nothing but crap. I've tried..

People still chat daily in the K6Plus IRC channel; however, what goes on there tends to be totally unrelated to the site itself. Most of the folks you're familiar with from the forums have not set foot in chat.

bummer :( irc lets you get to know folks better and troubleshoot live sometimes.

Well there's still plenty of computer knowledge to be found there. Just not nearly as K6 specific as you can find here in the forum.

I'll try to catch some folks in there then :D
