How big do you think pics in our news should be?

Post by Nohr »

This is something that's come up recently. We tend to put relevant pics in our news to stir up more interest in the various stories and reviews we post. So we were trying to figure out what file size we should stick under and I thought the best way would be to get the opinions of our users and see what they wanted. Keep in mind that there's always several days news on the front page.

I keep them under 30KB myself to keep the front page manageable for dialup'ers.

Anyway, vote and let us know what you think. Or if you have an idea not covered in the poll answers, feel free to post it here.

Keep them small, 20KB tops!

I haven't voted yet as I think a test is in order to see just how a weeks worth of 50-75K pics on the front page would load up on a Dial-Up connection. 30K and under will be fine as that is what we basically do all ready, and I have no problems at all loading.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub70.ezboard.com/uazk6er.showPu ... >AZK6er at: 4/20/02 4:50:53 am

Just for reference, going from my news today (20th) through the oldest news on the front page, there is 292KB of images in our news posts.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz@1.35GHz (9x150)
Iwill KK266
256MB Crucial PC133 CAS2 5-2-2
Gainward GeForce3 Ti200 4ns 234/530
Gateway EV910 19" monitor (1600x1200 .26mm)
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB 7200rpm
Lite-On 24/10/40 CD-RW | Asus 40x CD-ROM | Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM
Windows XP Professional

Where we are a news page, I think that people will be willing to wait an extra few seconds for the images, and we define our image sizes to allow people to keep reading while the pics load.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so as long as they don't dominate the front page (i.e. go over 450 pixels on the width) I say don't worry about this too much. I would try to keep the pic count for each day to a comfortable level (2-3 is probably plenty, depending on the news items).

OK. I emptied all my caches and loaded up the front page just 1 day before you Archived it Nohr, on my 24k connection it took me almost 90 sec. to fully load the page, with full caches about 10-15 sec's. 24k should be a worst case scenario for Dial-Up I would think.
