Why Mr Toastz has uninvolved himself and gone rogue

Post by Mr Toastz »

First off, thank you to everyone that has contributed to K6Plus since our humble beginnings close to two years ago...

I really do regret not being able to do more for the site, but seeing that I have a job that sucks the life right out of me (I've worked OT on every check since they hired me until just a couple of weeks ago - and as I do the work of two people quite often, including now seeing a coworker is out on radiation therapy, that doesn't leave much energy for anything). They FINALLY cut as many people below 40 hours a week as they could (I now work just shy of 40), which just means we have to work even harder while we are here... stress puppy doesn't even begin to explain how I feel!

Add to this that I have another passion (photoshop art) that I am teaching/forcing myself to get good at whenever I have free time, and that pretty much kills any remaining free time I have.

So I do what I can (i.e. make sure the site bills get paid and do the occasional banner). I had hoped that others would be able to contribute more articles to fill the vacuum left by my not writing much anymore, but that hasn't happened.

What frustrates me even more is that while I haven't made any significant upgrades in over a year (that NV7M board? Still sitting in the box until I get time to assemble the new system), several others involved in the site have purchased multiple upgrades. This is fine, but since writing reviews and such hasn't been a priority in these cases, we've missed quite a few opportunities that would have been of benefit to our readers.

I should note that the article that gets more hits (by a wide margin) on our site than any other is Blue's XP Tweaking guide (because we are linked from the MadOnion forum). This tells me that people respect Blue's take on things, and I really think he should write articles more often. Being a busy high school student though, I understand that there are other priorities. I just wish he would actually write more often, so that our readers could benefit from his experience.

Relay falls in the same vein, except college is the priority for him. Nonetheless, I am still anxiously awaiting an article about his wood case projects. He does very nice work, and it should be shared!

Finally, there's Nohr. Nohr is the backbone of this site these days (he handles the day-to-day html/php chores), as well as collecting/coding news. This is definitely a worthy effort, but Nohr has better opportunities than some others involved in the site to write. Except he hates to write. Too bad too! Here is his uncompleted A7N8X article:

<a href="http://www.k6plus.com/articles/art.php? ...

In my opinion, this is a damn fine article that should be shared as much as possible (even without the benchmarks being included). There are several insights here that our readers definitely would be interested in reading (hence my posting it here).

Nohr and I got into a heated discussion over this, and as I know that the site will suffer considerably with his loss, I have decided to uninvolve myself with the site. Nohr, Relay, and Blue have done a fine job in my absence (not that I had time to do a whole lot before). However, I am still supporting the site in my own way (overseeing the site giveaways, working on sharing my photoshop skills, etc.), but am avoiding the chatroom entirely so that I don't get any more pissed.

In our heated discussion, Nohr said that our site will never be another Anandtech. While I never expected us to reach such heights, I have tracked our stats enough times to know that, when we do have new articles that we share with the other sites, our traffic goes up considerably during these periods. In order for our site to grow, we need to have articles to share with the other sites, so they have reason to link us. And the more times we are linked, the more times a few of those people that read our articles decide to make us part of their daily rounds.

I would just like to see this site grow again, but significant growth only comes with more articles.

I finally received our second commission check about a week ago (which was mostly from things I have bought for the site). It would be nice to have a few more people onboard, so when that 'need for ram' or whatever strikes, more people end up buying from our adverstisers (and us getting the resulting commission). Without any further growth, this is not likely to happen.

This site could be destined for greater things. Yes, we are an enthusiasts site, but apparently we aren't enthusiastic enough to achieve any more than we have now. I expected more, and must now live with my disappointment. Learn me to expect people to be more than they are.

Some may read this and interpret this as finger pointing. That isn't my intention at all. After all, Nohr, Blue, and Relay (and others) are working very hard to keep our news updated daily. It just irks me that more people don't get to benefit from their efforts (as our existence is not well known to begin with).

So I guess until myself and/or a few others are able to write articles for the site again, I'll continue to be irked, and do my part (i.e. pay out of my own pocket) to keep the site out of the red.

Seems it will take it's time getting some servlets for automating much, if not all, of the news handling (submission, publishing and archiving) up and running.

I'm afraid I can't wait any longer, so I've put the source code and deployment archive on my account, it's up for grabs if anyone feels up to deploying it.

k6p ...

It's not quite finished (archiving functions are not coded yet).
Feel free to ask questions regarding it, I'll answer to the best
of my abilities.
------------------------------[ my rig ]------------------------------
K6-3+ 450@577 (115 x 5), Gigabyte GA-5AX rev5.2
386 MB generic RAM
15 GB Quantum Fireball LCT + 60 GB Seagate Barracuda IV
Radeon 8500LE @ 294/326 MHz (core/mem)
SB Live! I'm not trying to lay blame on anyone, it's just that school-work has taken over and I need to focus on that.

I've created the appropriate folder on the server, created
the database and given Dixiesys, what I believe, is the appropriate config file. I can't be sure since I have no experience of how Apache/Tomcat work together with virtual host.

And just to be absolutely clear, it's Tomcat (Jakarta) we want
enabled since the servlets are Java-code.

I guess it might be easier to either get some free script and configure that or convert the whole thing to PHP, either way
I'm out of the loop since I don't have the know-how.
------------------------------[ my rig ]------------------------------
K6-3+ 450@577 (115 x 5), Gigabyte GA-5AX rev5.2
386 MB generic RAM
15 GB Quantum Fireball LCT + 60 GB Seagate Barracuda IV
Radeon 8500LE @ 294/326 MHz (core/mem)
SB Live!
