Using tool to tweak PLL on Tyan S1598C2

Post by madbilly »

Hi all,

First of all I've been away from the super7 scene since I went xp a couple of years ago, but i've been toying with the idea of getting together a few old parts and knocking up a decent super7 box just to mess around with. I've got a soyo 5ema+, which is a good board, but there are a couple of things on other boards that i fancy such as 2mb cache and ata66.

I saw the review at Freak on the Freeway FW-5VGF+/ultra which looked awesome, but then realised that I didn't have a cat's cahnce of getting one! So I've been looking at getting a Tyan S1598C2 but I notice that the fsb can't be overclocked. I've read in a couple of threads about using a software tool to tweak the PLL chip or something, and I wondered if this could be done on a S1598C2 to get it to go over 100MHz? Anyone know of any problems with the Tyan?

Other than the Tyan I've also noticed that the Epox thingyG5 is seen as pretty good, and that someone has made custom bioses for it. One thing I'm interested in is how the 8 way interleave works when you only have 3 dimm sockets - I know someone else asked this but there wasn't an answer.

Finally, what are people's experiences with using AGP 3.0 cards in super7 boards? I know that chances are they may not work, as they may not run off the 3.3V supply but I was just wondering.

Cheers for reading, and in case you're wondering I'm from sunny Yorkshire in Britain, hence my strange phrasing.

PS - anyone know what happened to the site super7.net? they had some good stuff on there and it would have been a shame to lose it all.

Now then,

I managed to get my login working so I could post as myself, how good is that?!

Anyway, I found the answers out pretty much actually looking around the site some more, even though I spent most of yesterday trawling though, I still managed to miss some stuff - you lot really know what you're doing don't you, such a wealth of knowledge.

Anyway, in case anyone else reads and wants to know, the Tyan will not go over 100fsb which is a pain is it not. However, from all account its a good board so I might try and get one off this mitsubishi guy whereever he is.

Found the link to the old super7 pages in your links section. Very nice very useful thanks for that.

Hopefully I'lll soon have my toy system up and I'll be able to tell you what I managed with it. I'm still interested in the Epox custom bios 8-way interleave with 3 banks though...?

Cheers,

Will

Welcome madbilly,

I have an Epox G5 and tried the modded BIOS. Yeah, it has 8 way interleave as an option, but when selecting it, there was no performance difference. As for AGP 8X cards, I've had a 9500Pro in the G5 and it ran nice, but the G5 is more tolerant of high end AGP cards than a lot of Super7 boards.

The old super7.net site has most of the stuff linked off the Web Links on the left side here. super7.net was last updated in June of 2000 I believe, so the link is pretty up to date. But unfortunately, all the forums are gone. There was really no explanation given as to why the site went away.
E-Machines T6000 (AMD64 3200+) (Don't laugh! It absolutely rocks!)
GigaByte K7N400 Pro2, 3200+, 1 GB DDR, 80 GB WD SE
Epox MVPG5, K6-III+@550, 384 SDRAM, 80 GB WD SE
TX97-XE, K6-III+@400, 256 SDRAM, 40 GB WD HD

Hi George, thanks for the welcome!

So AGP 3.0 cards may work in certain boards, but which boards is basically related to how stable they are anyway right? Sounds about right. I had problems with my TNT2 in my 5EMA+, not getting enough power I think, but not bad enough to actually make the system unusable.

Thanks for the info on the bios, and the super7.net pages. I had a look around them and there's some good stuff there.

Cheers, and here's hoping I find a G5 (or maybe a Freeway 5VGF+ on ebay!)

I dunno really about AT cards, because I've been limiting my search to ATX! I've heard that the FIC one with 2MB cache is the best AT board, but like you say it doesn't have ata66. The Soyo 5EHM is meant to a really good AT board, but again it's only 1mb cache and ata33 :( I can't be certain about any AT board really, but I've put some links below of review and info sites for various boards.

Kalabok,

This board is very similar to the TMC TI5VGF and the TMC TI5VGA boards. The VGF has virtually the same layout with the only difference being the ATA33 rather than ATA66. Both the TMC boards have 2mb of cache. However, like the DFI XV3+ board it is not possible to get these boards stable with memory interleaving. Another point with the TMC boards is that you can only use 3x128mb memory modules maximum. I reckon this board will be the same.

I could not get the E3 bios to work on the TI5VGA board. This is unfortunate as this is supposed to be the bios that recognises K6plus cpus. Knowing that the Freeway board TI5VGF+ ultra is very similar to the TI5VGA, and that the bios for the Freeway TI5VGF board is compatible to the TMC TI5VGF board, I decided to flash the TI5VGA board with the TI5VGF+ ultra bios.

Cool! It works and now my TI5VGA board is recognised as a Freeway TI5VGF+ ultra board on the bios boot screen. This bios also recognises the K6plus cpus.

I have submitted all of the bioses in question to Jan to see if he can sort it out as to why the TMC bios doesn't seem to work yet the Freeway one does.
