Modding the MVP3C2 BIOS
hey everyone,
first of all some corrections:
motherboard rev. 0.2! not 1.2 ... and bios date 12/21/2000. sorry
@ donpedro. in may 2004 i dont even knew about this site. i do not have any idea of winbondchips and their specifications.
everest version 2.20.450 i think ... i dont have got internet at home
@ all. the cpu/pci bus is realy running at 133/44 mhz. i proved it comparing everest benchmark results with running dimms at cpu and agp speed. since agp runs two times faster than pci, ive got 44+-1mhz pci frequency. another evidence was sticking in my scsi controller card, which runs only till 40 mhz. there was an error message like "chip failed to initialize" ...
so the system is realy running at 133/44. sometimes my floppy refuses to boot. but i can stand it.
for benchmark results see the other topic.

Here is the link to the datsasheet ->

It appears that by software (I²C), you CAN set this device to 133/33/66.
By hardware (jumper), only 133/44/88 is available.

My DFI K6BV3+/66 MVP3 boards have a very similar PLL, (Winbond 83194R-58A); and they do not seem to have a 1/4 system divider. WPCredit has the system divider settings at 60 - 08 bits 0 & 1; and for my chipset what is available is : 01 =3x = 100MHz; 00 = 2x = 66MHz; 11 = 2.5x = 75/83MHz. The undocumented setting 10 as best I can recall gave exactly the same results as 01.
EDIT : I just tried the undocumented 10 setting again; and what it did was default right back to 01 as soon as I ok'd setting a new register.
You can check what your chipset has to offer in the way of system dividers by checking what is at 60 - 08 bits 0 & 1 in WPCredit.
EDIT : Well, I didn't have CPU Cool loaded on this machine because of its processor being shaky; but I just installed it to check the PCI Bus speeds available if the FSB is set at 133MHz. KachiWachi is right, there is a setting for 133 MHz FSB w/ 1/4 Divider.. What I don't understand is why WPCredit doesn't show it.

68h bits 0-1 are Read Only...you can't change them from there.
You need to talk to the PLL, which is what CPUCool (and other related programs) do.
I don't know how the chipset will react to this, since there is no 4x mode defined.
It *may* read x0, since that is what it will read for 66MHz/2x mode (we don't care what the first bit is since we support nothing higher, but x can be either a 0 or a 1 so...).
I would bet that for 66MHz it will read 00, but for 133MHz it will read 10, since that is what the 694X chipset will read (1x for 133MHz/4x mode).

i am testing the mvp3c2 board now to prove if the 133fsb and 44pci are able to run stable for a long period.
the true question is - is 44 mhz pci clock bearable for the used devices? i will let you know in some weeks if i had undesired effects or hardware deaths.
now running a k6-2+ @ 667 mhz and 2,3V. frequency selection via bios settings.
next week i recieve a sis540 board for testing. im quite interested, if 166 mhz fsb are possible on a super 7 board. maybe will need tonicom sdram for proving.

There is no way to know for sure...since this totally depends on the device being overclocking.
Think of it as akin to running your car engine over the redline for extended periods of time. Sooner or later, things *may* go BOOM!
Thanks.

on one hand thats true,
but on the other - every board has the same chipset, ide, floppy and usb controller. and they operate independant from all pci devices, or am i wrong? so if the board is working properly on 44mhz pci, that onboard devices do so as well. or do their frequencies differ/ have another percantage of overclocking than for the pci ones?
can someone out their tell me about problems for the mvp3c2 for 133mhz? would be good to know.

If a device is attached to the bus, then the clocking applies to it.

its an award bios, version 4.51pg, 12/21/2000. modbin is a nice prog to unhide some settings. but i found nothing amazing doing so.
the 133/44 setting is availible in normal bios, but the pll only accepts that setting on 3. or 4. reboot everytime. it loads the settings choosen by jumper first, here the max fsb is only 112mhz.

Pardon my ignorance; but what do you mean when you say : "the PLL only accepts that setting on 3. or 4. reboot everytime" ? Have you tried CPU Cool to see if you can get 133 / 33 that way ? It deals directly w/ the PLL. Have you checked for undocumented jumper settings ? NK a long time ago posted a link to a bios modding program, that I think is called the bios patcher, which you may find usefull, though I doubt if it would help if you say the jumpers take precedence over the bios settings.

the epox mvp3-XY series mobos (at least C2, i think G2 and G5 as well) have an award bios, where the fsb can be switched by software (in chipset settings). if i have 112 mhz set via jumpers (hardware) and now i want to boot the board @ 133 via bios, nothing happens on first reboot. i enter bios, exit without saving (the 133mhz fsb setting is still there) for 3 or 4 times till it realy accepts the 133mhz. weird.
jim, there are no undocumented jumper settings, its an epox . at least for fsb - cpu voltage can be set to 1,3V on the mvp3c2. no word about that in manual ... switching the fsb with cpucool is no prob if the pci divider remains constant. never ever had 133/33 running on a mvp3. but the pll is able to manage it!
i dont think a bios patch could make the system run at this desired speed. the w83194r-58 datasheet shows possible settings via hardware and software. what you can do is solder in some more jumpers, connect them right to the pll and so enable the 133/44 setting by jumpers. what you can not do is to force the bios talking with one more bit enabling 133/33.
amazing thing is - changing pci dividers on the run was no problem on my aladdin 7 board. it is just a newer version of the w83194r.

I can answer your second question...NO.
Reason: Part availability at the time of manufacture.

i would answer the first question - no, emp, there are no mvp3 boards with 133/33 fsb support. via claimed that chipset to work only @ 100 mhz or lower. why should board manufactures involve a 133/33 selection, if the chipset may not handle it?
on the second one - its obvious the other way arround. its like in math - if a body is a sphere, it has a sertain volume. but if a body has a sertain volume, its not obviously a sphere.
