K6-2 I knew ye well...

Post by punkrawker82 »

I'd like to take this moment to comemorate a wonderful K6-2 system that is nolonger in one piece. It was a great little rig that just kept on going...even after I fried its BIOS last December and had to get a replacement chip

I recently upgraded to an Athlon XP-A(Barton) 2600+ CPU and an Abit NF7-S v2.0 Mobo with 512Mb Kingston DDR3200 RAM. I used the Case/PSU, drives and videocard from my beloved K6-2 system, so its nolonger with us. I do plan to piece it back together sooner or later with a new Case/PSU and some different drives, and all the PCI cards I had crammed in it...

And of course I'll still be here at K6plus...

Well congrats, that should be a good system, Athlon's rock! :D

Just throw that system back together, you won't regret it! My K6 is the basement computer which I use once in a while (mostly for LAN parties). I have all the best secondary parts I could find and voila, awesome backup system.
Take my advice and get that thing together sooner rather than later. If you primary system ever has problems, you'll still be able to access the internet for help with the K6 system. You must be able to scrounge around for some parts! I personally suggest the garbage scrounging method.
You'd be surprised what people throw out, usually perfectly good hardware. I have found at least 2 AT cases this way, not to mention other parts. My friend was once in the back alley of his work, and the computer store next door threw out an old Dell system (pretty much where they belong). Yet, he was able to take the 6x CD drive, PII CPU, and other small things from it. He gave me the CD drive and it worked well, I had it in my system until recently.

You don't need to dive into garbage bins, but keeping an eye open for people's castaways will get that system back together in no time. If not, come to Toronto, I have plently of parts lying around (much to my wife's chagrin).

If you are in T.O. , highly recommend the dumpsters in back of computer related factories up in Markham. I have found cases of unopened mobos (10 to a case), sound cards, video cards, lan cards, as many cases as I care to take, a brand new (unused) 300 w AT server supply (lots of cables and plugs -no need for splitters), HDDs, etc. up there. Got so much stuff, I no longer bother. Sold over 400 boards to retailers , and sold alot of it for scrap to precious metal recyclers too. 25 cents a pound. I still have 4 tape backup drives that I have no use for. (also have a K6-2 533 that I am not using if you want to upgrade)

Yes, the new system is running well. I do however have minor problems with the NF7-S's onboard sound. I get glitchy repeating sound effects or noise when playing some games. And when watching movies, the sound will fast forward 2 secs then play normally then fast forward again....very strange. I checked that I had the latest drivers and everything. I'm afraid onboard sound is destined to suck for eternity, no matter who makes it. Maybe I should put the Ensoniq card in, or buy a new SB Live! for around $30. I hope when I get to college this semester the onboard ethernet port works well

I appreciate the offers, but I'm in SC right now. I don't think I'll be north anytime soon, though I do plan on moving back some day.

I do plan on putting my K6-2 back together soon, but I really need a new PSU/case first. I actually was thinking about another ATX rather than an AT. I just leave the ATX's back port panel off. ATX is much nicer and I'll have a stronger PSU. I'm glad the P5A-B has both AT and ATX power connectors. :) I have an old case and PSU right now, but its very fugly because I tried to spray paint it and did a horrible job.

And as far as the dumpster diving, that's awesome!!! I can't believe ppl would throw away working motherboads and optical drives and stuff. Whats the ratio of working stuff to broken stuff you've found?? Hmmm, I should try that out at some local computer stores. When is the best time to do that stuff, right after closing time or at night?? And if the owners did catch me back there would I be in any sort of legal trouble, or is it ok to take anything that has been "thrown out" already?? :D

Try this driver for your sound problem:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dla ... tware=True

And the SB will get very hot and can distort the sound, try a heatsink on it.

With mobos, about 40% work if they are lying loose. If still packed in their original shipping cases, they get sold as factory sealed; and treated as 100%. Trouble ? No they don't care, the more you take away the less they have to pay to have hauled away. (Though to be on the safe side you can always walk in and ask the owner if they mind if you take something-subject to the condition that you leave the place as neat as you find it.)

It was dumpster diving at QDI, where they were throwing out so much stuff that I couldn't keep up with them, and was freezing my can off digging through snow filled dumpsters, that led me to go to them and say : "Look if you are throwing this stuff out anyway, why not sell it to me cheap"? $500.00 CDN. got me a four ton truck load filled to the roof all the way to the back.

I'm kinda confused about the driver link. My onboard sound is nvidia(nForce/Soundstorm) based, not realtek based...Are they the same thing?? :?:

$500 for 4 ton truckload, woot!

I do apologise. You have an NF7-S not a NF7. I misread. They use different sound chips.

Hope you didn't screw anything up.

Hey PK don't know if this is in any way related but I was also getting skippy sound, with a completely different card. (Mine is an Audigy 1 MP3) and (Radeon 9000 aiw Pro), could be the problem is more generic than you think. I was getting skippy sound playing DVDs. Went away after I used the "FDISK/MBR" command in dos from a 98 boot disk while trying to solve another problem regarding being unable to play a movie.

I have an nForce2 motherboard also (Asus A7n8X-Dlx), definite sound problems with these suckers... I put a heatsink on the southbridge, but it didn't do anything. I have the infamous popping/crackling noise problem. There are solutions listed if you check out http://www.nforcershq.com, but I think I tried them all to no avail for me personally. Just check the stickies in the Soundstorm section, you may find an answer.

As far as tossed hardware, it doesn't always work, but at least 75% of the stuff I have found was still OK. Not bad for free. :D
