I'm working on my first Socket7 PC in about 5 years (as a spare PC for my wife). It is using a lot of spare parts, and the mobo is a Mitac Camaro (from an old Compaq). It's MVP4I belive, and has onboard AGP (BARF), so its gonna get a PCI video card. Has anyone tried the GF FX5200 PCI yet? I'd like it to be able to play Sims 2 (the only game she uses my PC for). Theres 2 versions out from PNY Ibeleve, a 128mb version and a 256mb version. Someone help me out with some info on recommended PCI video!!
Coming Soon:
K6-3+ 400 @unknown
PCI video
60 WD hdd
Lots of recycled compaq parts
ATI TV Wonder VE
Sound Blaster Live 1.0
Best PCI videocard for SS7?
RE: Best PCI videocard for SS7?
There's a PCI video card roundup at:

from about a year ago. Of course they tried theirs on a > 2 GHz P4 so I don't know how applicable it would be.
But then again, the minimum requirements for Sims2 goes beyond any Socket7 system. See here:

I'll make it run, dont worry. It may chug a bit, but it will go.
I was actually looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 061&depa=1
but I don't know if its compatible with older PC's circa 2000.

I don't see any reason why that XFX card wouldn't work. It's supported as far back as Windows 95 and the minimum supported CPU is a Pentium III. A K6-III in many aspects is faster than the low-end P3 processors. To be honest, it's a PCI card, and if you have a driver that works with the OS you want to install, it should function even on a 486 PCI system.

Ummm, maybe because most 486/Pentium and older Pentium 2 motherboards don't utilize a compatible PCI spec?jsc1973 wrote:I don't see any reason why that XFX card wouldn't work. Note to Pemdawg: If you go to page 2 of this forum, (Hardware), about the 31st topic down from the top of that page, You will find the topic "5200FX" by Jesse1313. He did it , with some difficulty, which he spells out in detail. Good Luck.
And J.S.C., you are right. But it is not as simple as you implied. Good to hear from you though. Haven't heard much from you lately.
