@ Stedman : In answer to your question about "How that works", I don't know. It is something I discovered when I was downclocking my machine from 6x 100MHz at the request of TA152H. If you read the thread from the beginning you will find all my test results and comments. When he has time, Cake is going to look into this matter.

I have never used WPCredit on Superpuppy 2, (my ASUS P5A-B Rev 104 machine), and would be interested to know : "what WPCredit tweaks are you using ?" Thanks.

Hi Jim,

Here are some more interesting results

P5A rev 1.04
K6-III+ @550 fsb100 multiplier 5.5X
Hynix pc133 cl2 memory
ExtCache on / page count set at disabled

(No tweaks/with tweaks)
memory read (308/327)
memory write (140/140)
Memory latency (207/199)

Extcache off/page count set at 16T
memory read (314/333)
memory write (155/166)
memory latency (210/199)

with poorer memory I could not get all these tweaks to work.
Anyway register 4001 bit6 set to enabled (fast dram read)
This really pushed up the memory read
register 4008 set bits 1 and 0 to 10 (ras to cas 5)
Marginal improvement
register 400A set bit 4 to 1
Pushes up the memory write

If you see any other registers worth changing let us know :wink:

Thanks,

Stedman

PS I tried the 4001 tweak at 105 and it wouldn't take it.

Don't know why you are getting such lousy numbers w/ cache on. Think there must be some other tweaks that you are missing. Do you have "Write Allocate" enabled in the bios? Do you use "K6Speed" at all? Do you use "Power Tweak 2" ? Do you set your RAM @ the 7ns, (143MHz), setting ?

Anyway, w/ the same equipment, (Superpuppy 2 K6-3+ 450ACZ @ 5.5x 100MHz @ 2.1 v. on an ASUS P5A-B Rev 104), I was getting :
Everest :
Memory Read = 317 MB/s
Memory Write = 153 MB/s
Memory Latency = 201.8 ns
So you must be missing something. Also, about your Hynix Ram, do the designation ot the chips end in "-H" or "-K" ? ("-H" is CL3 @ 133 MHz & CL2 @ 100 MHz) -- ("-K" is CL2 @ 133 MHz & also CL2 @ 100 MHz)

Finally: The reason that I have never used WPCredit on my Asus Boards, is that when I go to try it, I get a warning message that the PCR file is the wrong one for my chipset. Do you ever get that ?

The PCR file could just be named improperly.

Example -

Apollo Pro133A Chipset
Vendor ID (VID) = 1106 = VIA (Registers 00:00-01)
Device ID (DID) = 0691 = Host to PCI bridge (Registers 00:02-03)

Filename = 11060691.PCR

If the registers don't match the filename, WPCredit will complain.

Well my Northbridge is an "M 1541"; and my Southbridge is an "M 1543C";
The WPCredit PCR Files that I have for these boards are : "10b91541.pcr", "10b95229.pcr", and "10b95243.pcr". Question : Does that constitute a mismatched name? If so then everybody using a P5A-B Rev 104 should be getting the same message. Are they ?

Jim,

When I load the pcr file I do not get any error messages. I use the 10b91541.pcr file. As to write allocate it is set to enabled in WPCREDIT. I have not used k6speed or powertweak2, but I do run ctu. Will I get any more from k6speed?

Bios is set to 7ns(143MHz)

Hynix ram is the K variant PC133 CL2

You'd have to open the PCR file as text and read the header information.

K, Just tried it again. What I get is a popup screen with "Yes" and "No" buttons, showing : "Vendor I.D. / Device I.D. differs !! Does it continue?" Note : When I run Everest, it identifies my North Bridge as : "ULi / ALi M1541" ; and my South Bridge as : "ULi / ALi M1543C". WPCredit shows the "Host Bridge PCR File" as being : "10B9 1541" . The PCR Filename is : "10b91541.pcr". Open it w/ Notepad and what it says is :

[Comment]=Author R.Ruck
[Model]=Aladdin V
[VID]=10B9:ALi
[DID]=1541:Host Bridge

I don't know, could it be that I have one made by ULi ? I have tried renaming the file to capitalize the "B", tried putting a space between 10B9 and 1541; nothing seems to make the file acceptable to WPCredit.

K, Here are the WPCredit settings, (Unmodified), that I get on Superpuppy 2, (ASUS P5A-B Rev 104), from using "K6Speed", & "PowerTweak 2". Have found that although PowerTweak 2 performs some of the same functions as other software, (WPCredit, Bios settings, K6Speed, etc.), it seems to do it in a different manner, because when I disable Power Tweak my numbers go down. i.e. for example I have "Write Allocate" enabled both in my bios and by K6Speed. Well the same is true of PowerTweak 2. i.e. It enables settings that have also been enabled by other means; but with a difference that : 1) Gives me better numbers & 2) Sometimes causes crashes when the machine is highly stressed.

EDIT : I downloaded the attached file myself ; and found that the process of converting it to Html had made an unholy mess out of it, so here goes a different way of doing things.

@ KachiWachi : No, doesn't look like it, I thought of that too. -- But if that were the case, everybody using those PCR Files would have the same problem. I think I must have a "ULi" chip; and I have no idea if it is any different from the "ALi" chip. -- i.e. same settings in different places?

I don't think that matters (ULi/ALi). You can tell WPCredit to load any PCR file you want...even though it is the wrong one. It will just complain with an error message if the filename does not match the currently loaded hardware.

As a test, I just renamed the PCR file I made for my video card to the name of the chipset. It loaded with no error, but of course nothing matches.

Code: Select all

Filename: 10B91541.PCR

Chipset Register Dump:

   00 01 02 03 04 05
00 B9 10 41 15 .. ..
01 .. .. .. .. .. ..
02 .. .. .. .. .. ..

Anyway Everest, (I think - from memory here, - it may be Sandra), is saying that my North Bridge is Revision 4. - Don't know if that makes a difference either. Just know that if my board is the same as Stedman's, then he should get that error message too. - But he isn't, so something must be different.

Jim,

I can tell you that on both of my boards. Both Rev 1.04 and 1.06 I do not get an error message. The Aladdin chipsets involved are both different revisions. Rev E for the 1.04 and Rev G for the 1.06. Both of the boards fire up with the same pcr file and report the same values for a lot of the host bridge settings. I could send you a list of register settings with the appropriate values and we could see if the values match with the same bios settings for the 1.04 board.

regards,

Tony.

Maybe you should swap PCR files and see what happens while you are at it.
