Hey THANKS Wiggy !! If you hadn't disappeared for a while you'd still be ahead of me in post count, and would be one step above "Elite" by now.

Well... welcome back the prodigal Soltek Fan! :D

Nice to see you return to the forums Wiggy... been a little quiet lately, Jim has been busy hasn't he? ;)

I don't know if it's dedication or obsession... but either way a nice piece of craftmanship! :D

Superpuppy-3 will be going down for its rebuild this weekend. Don't know for sure how long it will take to get it all the way back up; but it has been running in a reduced state for a while; and I've finally collected most of the parts I need. Only thing left is something to fill the Orb bay. Not sure what to do there. Open to suggestions.

Edit : Just discovered that I am going to have to custom make a mount for my new "Thermaltake - Smart Case Fan 2 - P/N : A1357" front chassis fan's speed control pot, - which has no method whatsoever of mounting it built in. Also custom make an adapter so the knob chosen will fit properly on the shaft of the mini pot they give you w/out a knob.

If that were'nt enough, I also have to mod both the case, (wire passage & mount), and the front panel, (hole for the knob to protrude through.) Why can't they ever do anything right? Modding the case and front panel, ok; but no provision whatsoever for mounting? Disgusting!!

"Coppertown"

Post by Jim »

Sinks & processor w/ fan/heatsink combo are mounted now. Am working on other new features. At first I was worried that the "Stacker Fan" would cause interference problems w/ the front HDD; but such was not the case. Fits beautifully.

Coppertown is dominated by the towering Vantec building, and to a lesser extent by the twin Husky towers.

There, that "Pimped Out" enough for you TAZ? -- More to follow later.

For now, I am on Superpuppy-2.

Jim,

Glad to see that big chunky copper cooler on your cpu. That should improve your boot up temperatures and running temps. Do you normally boot up at the full 6x or do you use K6 speed or ctu to adjust the multiplier after boot? With that cooler you should be able to boot at 600 no problems. By the way my K6-III+/450 @ 600 is now running completely stable at 1.83V or 1.80V set on the motherboard (AX59Pro). Must see if I can now run at 112fsb.

@jim:
fantastic work, looks terrific, congratulations!
would like to hear whether your cooling armada helps - and to what degree - to run your system stabely with raised fsb-speed. ........

@stedman:
what did you do to have it both ways: low voltage AND stable oc'ing to 600Mhz?

K , First @ Stedman. I now normally boot up @ 5.5x100, not because I am worried about anything; but because my goal is 5.5x112; and the DFI has no provision to OC the FSB. It has to be done through software. e.g. CPU Cool. The reason I am shooting for 5.5x112, is because I have found that you get the best Memory Write speed using the 5.5 multiplier. If, (which I doubt), I actually succeed in getting 5.5x112, (with cache enabled), then I may try 5.5x115.

Next @ Peter. If I actually get 5.5x112, w/ cache enabled, that will be a definite gain, cause I couldn't do it before. Don't worry, I'll let you know how it goes. If it actually works, my horn blowing will be deafening. Stedman uses BIG copper heatsinks in his machines. That is probably why he can run such low v at such high speed. Low Temps.

Generally : This rebuild is gonna take a while. Finally got the custom mount made for the blankety blank stupid trim pot that came w/ my new thermaltake chassis fan. Was not easy. Dumb thing had absolutely nothing to mount it by. Had to fabricate a "surround" mount that contains it; and holds it still, while allowing the shaft to turn. Still have to fabricate the right length legs for the mount so as to have the knob protruding through the front panel the exact amount I want.

Gotta do the same act over w/ the "Greyhill", except it doesn't need a "surround" mount, because it has proper mounting arrangements. Just have to create a mount for it that holds it at the right height so again the knob protrudes through the front panel the exact amount I want. (Matching knobs these 2)

Other thing I still have to do is mount all my thermal sensors; and come up w/ a way of making the wiring removable, (unplugable), i.e. board is removable w/ sensors attached, w/out wires being dangling all over the place, so the whole thing can still come apart readily, and neatly. Gonna be busy a while yet.

Anyway here is the homemade "Mount" for a stupid trim pot w/ no means of "Mounting"

Image

Plan is to drill 4 holes where the feet go, then secure it w/ nuts from the other side. Will adjust height by shortening brass legs as needed. Want the knob to stick through the front panel a little less than a centimeter. Same sort of setup to follow for the "Greyhill".

Well Jim that certainly qualifies as "pimped totalmente!" :banana

I'm very impressed in your copper SDR heatspreaders too... they look sweeeeet!!! :D

After all that hard work... I hope you achieve your 112/115Mhz 'fsb' goal, sadly the aluminium chipset coolers look lonely outnumbered & outgunned by their copper gangsta' neighbours

How's about a window mod? to show off all that gleaming copper & hardwork 'under the hood' of Da' Supa Puppy? :D

That kind of thing, (window mod), I would have to get done professionally. I would not be able to match the paint job, then there is the matter that I don't want to wreck my case. Basically it is a bit beyond my skill level to tackle something like that.

You sell yourself short Jim...

1) Design window shape/dimensions
2) Cut out with a dremel or similar
3) Clean burrs etc. with a 'stonegrinding' attachment (dremel)
4) Cut perspex to design parameters (allow for overlap inside case)
5) Secure perspex to case cover with either chrome nut/bolts (short) OR pot rivets
6) Enjoy!

OR

1) Purchase 'on-line' a window kit
2) Use the supplied trace to 'mark out' cover (for cutting)
3) Cut out trace (cutting on the waste side of the line)
4) Clean up burrs etc. with 'that' dremel & attachment again
5) Fit precut perspex & rubber gasket to case cover
6) Enjoy!

Personally... I'm going for the first method (this time around) on my son's AT server case mod, I'll take progress pics' & post them if you like? ;)

I think that 'system' will be my last SS7 project for some time, and likely the closest thing I'll ever build to a "estupendo dingo..." ;)

Well, I re-thought that, and decided The "TAZ-Mania Tiger" was more appropriate.

I'll take that as 2 bananas coming from the guy who taught me that all K6-? Processors w/ the same 3 letter designation were designed and manufactured to the same specifications. Thanks Monaro. Many thanks, not just for the compliment but for sharing your knowledge, about processors, the way ASUS over volts, etc.

Introducing Superpuppy-5

Post by Jim »

Well, I am back online in a rather reduced state. Still have to figure out how to get the ASUS 9200 Radeon working; - right now making do w/ an old Diamond PCI card.

As everyone knows there are two general types of computers out there. One type is "Serious Business Machines", commonly used as servers in the business's of the world). This type is known as "AT" machines. The other type is "Toy Machines" principally used for playing games. This type is known as "ATX" Machines.- "X", as everyone who managed to get through fourth grade knows, stands for "WRONG". :P

Superpuppy-5, although an "AT", unfortunately shares some of the characteristics of "ATX" Machines.

1. It is a somewhat homely beast, though not nearly as bad as most "ATX" boxes from its timeframe.

2. Like ATX Machines the case dimensions were derived by going out and measuring the pig barn nearest to the point of manufacture.

3. Like ATX machines it lacks a critically important function found on most "ATs" namely a "Display" How is the absent minded user to remember how fast the machine is without a lit up display announcing the speed in Mhz? ATXs try to make up for this serious shortcoming by substituting "Light Shows"; however, these are useless fripperies which transmit no usefull information; but rather like the ridiculous size of ATX cases simply serve to make the machine look more imposing. Superpuppy-5 also has one of these useless lightshows.

Superpuppy-5 specs:
K6-3+ 450ACZ @ 5.5x100 (for now) w/ Monster HS/Fan combo
DFI K6BV3+ /66 Rev B2 w/ 1 Meg cache - (old SP3 board)
3x256 Meg Hynix PC133 CL2 SDRAM
WD 40 Gig (7200) Primary Master w/ 60mm cooling exhaust fan behind.
WD 80 Gig (7200) Primary Slave w/ 2x 40 mm cooling fans under & 60 mm exhaust fan behind.
Maxtor 10 Gig (5400) Secondary Master
LG Super Multi CDR/RW, DVD/DVDRW
ASUS 9200 Radeon AGP (Not working yet)
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
Diamond Lan
Nec USB 2
SiL 0680 IDE Controller
Triple Decker Hot Swap Tray w/ built in 80 mm cooling fan.
Maxtor 40 Gig (7200) Primary Master on 680 card
Maxtor 30 Gig (7200) Secondary Master on 680 card
Maxtor 30 Gig (7200) Secondary Slave on 680 card.
2x 1.44 Meg floppies w/ RED LEDs (much cooler looking than green)

Photos to follow when I get it working well enough to support such things.
The Superpuppy 3 rebuild is well advanced; but urgent need for something working has temporarily caused work on it to be suspended in order to get SP5 up.
