soyo sy-5ema+ ver1.1 jumper settings

Post by barney »

hello all, barney here. i was here a while ago to try to get settings to a similar board for cpu settings. i am trying to install a k6533 mhz processor in this board. it will not post, no video. i have pulled everything and i mean everything out to try to diagnose. there is just power supply, cpu/fan and speaker. i have a feeling that i have the switches wrong again.(the reason for my last post.) however this is a slightly different board. should i set it up as a 500mhz or a 550? there seems to be conflicting info on supported buss speeds?some say 100 some as high as 124mhz. i cant seem to find enough info to set these jumpers/sw1/sw2 j10, j8, j9 help anybody??!!
thanks barney

I would start by downloading the manual from Soyo, which I just did. Not sure that board has "Proper" support for a 533, not that it matters, you can set it @ 5x100, 5.5x95, and 5.5x100; and the processor should work in any of those configurations; though for the 5.5x100 you will probably have to go to 2.3v for the processor core, while for for 5x100, or 5.5x95, 2.2v should suffice. (The foregoing ASSUMING that this is NOT a K6-2 533+ processor that you are talking about.) For safetys sake you could start out at 5x100, then work from there. I would not get into Overclocking right off the bat because if you inadvertantly go too far, you can blowup something.

EDIT : Once you have the manual, you can set the jumper switches correctly; and go from there. If it still won't boot, start by clearing the bios, (With the machine turned OFF), either by removing the mobo battery for about ten minutes, or by using JP5. i.e. for a few seconds change JP5 from its normal setting of 1-2, to the Clear Bios setting of 2-3. After a few seconds, put it back at 1-2 before repowering up your machine.

Note : In case you have the manual; but find it confusing, these are your settings for a K6-2 533 non plus type processor. Before you use them I would recommend that you check the cap on the processor to make sure it is not a K6-2 533+.

For 500 or 522.5 MHz w/ k6-2 533 processor : Set the core voltage @ 2.2 v. i.e. Switch 2 settings as follows : 1=off, 2=on, 3=off, 4=off, 5=off. Note 5.5x95=522.5.

For 550 MHz w/ K6-2 533 processor : Set the core voltage @ 2.3v. i.e. Switch 2 settings as follows : 1=on, 2=on, 3=off, 4=off, 5=off.

To set the speed of the processor what you do is set both the "Front Side Bus" speed; and the "Multiplier". Multiplying the "FSB" by the "Multiplier" gives you your speed. eg 1) 5x100 = 500. eg 2) 5.5x95 = 522.5. eg 3) 5.5x100 = 550

For 500 Mhz set Switch 1 settings as follows : 1=off, 2=on, 3=on, 4=off, 5=off, 6=on.

For 522.5 MHz set Switch 1 settings as follows : 1=off, 2=off, 3=on, 4=on, 5=off, 6=on.

For 550 MHz set the Switch 1 settings as follows : 1=off, 2=off, 3=on, 4=off, 5=off, 6=on.

The settings for Jumpers 8, 9, and 10 depend on what kind of ram you are using. If you are using very old RAM i.e. PC66; the settings will vary from what is normal. In most cases JP8 will be set at 1-2, JP9 will be set at 2-3, and JP10 at 1-2.

thankyou for your reply. i have gone through almost the same problem( see aug 31/04) here. the processors are the same type k6-II 533 afx, but the board is a plus version of the sy-5ema series. i have rechecked all my switches, all look proper but no post, no beeps.i plan to use pc100 ram as i have read that there is no gain going to 133. i have both.

1) Did you try to clear the Bios? 2) What kind of video card are you using ? - recommend in situations like this you use a PCI card, at least until you get it going. 3) have you checked your mobo battery? 4) Are you sure that it is PC100 or PC133 Ram you are using? 5) Have you got another processor you can try in the board? - If so do that, especially if it is an older, slower model. - Some boards may need a bios upgrade to recognize 500 - 550 AFX processors.

i can add some more info. i got a-hold of a soyo debugging card. if i interpert the led's correctly i am having problems with the pcirst circuit. the manual says that it should come on momentarily, does not come on at all. also 3 volt standby circuit is not lit as well. may be power supply or? shorted board? i am tearing it out of the case at this moment to try bare board and power supply.. dave

First if you have another board to use, test all components you are using in the other board to insure they are working; particularly the power supply; but also the PCI video card. Recommend also trying another stick of RAM, (double sided).

EDIT : Afterthought; check the board for blown capacitors. Generally caps that are visibly bulging, usually; but not always , on top. See recent post by "Tazwegion" in the "Other Systems" section for photos of what a blown cap looks like.

Finally, check w/ other people; and when you have exhausted all other possible remedies, try gently flexing the board slightly both concave and convex then try it again. Have heard that sometimes works to bring a reluctant board to life.
