BEEP --- --- beep --- beep --- beep

Post by Jim »

Ever heard that sound and been faced w/ a black screen after just putting a machine together? I have the odd time; and just the other day nailed down what is causing it.

Some, (maybe all, for all I know), boards require that you fill the RAM slots in order. i.e. first put a stick in DIMM1, before putting one in DIMM2, and fill both DIMM1 and DIMM2 before putting a stick in DIMM3. If you don't, it is black screen and BEEP, (pause) beep, beep, beep.

Hmmm... I would agree that such error codes would be determined to the chipset & manufacturer design, for example my FIC VA-502 boots & runs fine with empty ram slots 1/2 3/4, though this may be due to the fact that it utilizes 72 pin RAM in 5/6... while my LX chipset s370 motherboard didn't care where the ram was installed bank 1,2 or 3 ;)
