Temperature Monitoring

Post by Jim »

"Q" Gentlemen : If you had figured out a way, (strictly a hardware solution, - no software involved), to allow you to monitor the temperatures of as many as a dozen different things inside a machine; what would you choose to monitor?

hi jim,

got your pm.
mmmh, I am a little bit confused about what you are really talking about here ..... you got me on the wrong foot (as we say in austria). so maybe my answer sounds a little bit off track but I would like to know fan speed, cpu temp, fsb and total cpu speed.

hope my answer goes the right direction ...

Partly Peter, I was speaking soley about temperatures though. i.e. what things, (up to 12 max), would you like to keep an eye on their temperatures? e.g. CPU temp; HDD temp; Ram Temp? PLL Temp; Ambient Case temp? Chipset temp? etc.

I've seen add-on hardware that has 2 probes, I think (from memory) it also can monitor/control upto 2 fans maybe? ... it was a coolermaster product AFAIK ;)

I would add air inlet and outlet temp (assuming you can set this up in your case), since this will determine the overall cooling "effort" to begin with.

Remember...fans do not cool the air...they just move it.

seems to me that I instinctively knew that I didn't get it :) I should stop posting early in the morning .....

I agree with other posters here, that knowing in-case temperature and ambient temperature would be plus.

Wha Dat??

Post by Jim »

Yeah, I know about the various bay fillers that offer fan controls and a couple of temp sensors. Got one for Superpuppy-3 in fact. Thing is with only a couple of temp sensors you could be missing something important. --- Soooo,

Wha Dat?

Image

Well the item on the right is an enlarged view, (plug on left for scale), of a "Greyhill" miniature 10 position rotary switch. Have a couple of them that I bought years ago, for model building, that I never did use.

Seemed to me that if instead of running the wires to both thermal sensors direct; I could, say, put one on the processor and run it direct; but run the second one through the "Greyhill", w/ 10 separate sensors attached on the output side. Then just switch from one to another to monitor temps for up to 10 items that way.

Question was : What ten items do I monitor? - Assuming Pat @ Uptown can find those extra sensors he has salted away.

K, got the sensors. Now where do I put them? Not including the CPU, any 10 places?

Thanks Cake. Notice you did not include the PLL. That Oversight? beirn_3 said that his got pretty hot when he OCed up to 690Mhz. Of course I've never tried anything like that, but I have noticed mine gets uncomfortably warm @ 112 FSB.

Yeah the PLL can be interesting to monitor as well,
I did the same as you and slapped a heatsink on it.

K, thanks. Now about the 12th sensor. That one comes w/ the chassis fan, and is used to regulate its speed. It does not give a temp readout, simply raises the chassis fan speed as the temp goes up. I was thinking of sticking that one on the back of my video card opposite the chip. That seems to get about as hot as anything does in there. Yet because of what appears to be solder tag spots, (holes w/ metal circles surrounding them), which seem to be common to those on the other side of the board, I can't put any kind of conductive surface, (heatsink), there; unless I put a piece of mica in between.

Suggestions?

Is it just the temp probe you want to attach?
If so, am I right in assuming it's just a thermistor bead?
In that case you could glue it in place.

Well actually I'd like to stick a heatsink there, and the sensors look like this :

Image

They are flat, very thin, and flexible. I don't know their correct technical name.
But the real issue is : Is that the best place for that particular sensor?
