If you're looking for the hottest spot in the computer it's either that place
or the backside of the CPU socket (or inside the socket itself) in my opinion.
As for mounting a heatsink on the backside over the PCB vias I'd hazard a try with thermally conductive tape like this:

There's most likely cheaper sources than that one..

Actually frag tape of any kind is very hard to find locally for some reason. Guess I'll have to order some online.

They look like thermocouples to me...though I can't say what type the might be (Type T, K, etc...).

Why not just measure things and see what you find as critical.

I'm glad to see they are insulated (looks like Kapton to me). I was going to mention that you should probably isolate the thermocouple (using Kapton) from the device being measured because you could get ground loops via the thermocouples as they pass through the monitoring device/display...which *might* cause some funny things to all of a sudden show up.

This is proving much harder than I envisaged. Problem is tight fit up front where switch goes; and complexity of designing this thing to all plug together neatly. This problem is considerably compounded by the fact that the pin out on the "Greyhill" is non standard in its spacing. Have decided that I will have to make a mount that bolts to the mobo that serves as a bus for the various plugs to connect to. i.e. Wires run from the thermal sensors and plug into the bus. Other wires plugged into the bus run up to plug into another bus attached to the "Greyhill". Still other wires plugged into the bus run to the display unit.

Gonna have to pick up a piece of fairly heavy guage aluminum big enough to fabricate a mount that will span between 2 mobo mounting bolts down in the ISA slot area, before I can go any further.
