Is DFI K6XV3+/66 Motherboard compatible with Windows XP?

Post by topherus »

Trying for 2 years to install Windows XP.
This board has me so crazy, I was this close to throwing it out the window!
Ran MS Windows Upgrade Advisor - no conflicts.
Reformatted HD. Did clean install of Windows XP. After XP did not load, booted up in Safe Mode. In Event Viewer, many ACPI & VSS errors.
Reinstalled XP. During setup, bypassed HAL installation; when asked about RAID & SCSI drivers, hit F6 (F5, F7 got no result) and chose "Standard PC". After installation, XP still did not load. Back in Safe Mode, Event Viewer showed NO ERRORS!! Only a warning about "COM+ Event System failed to fire the ConnectionMade method...".
There were no errors or conflicts in the Device Manager.
DFI tech support/forum was not helpful.
Is there anyone out there that can help me? :(

Memory 384 Mb SDRAM

BIOS flashed with upgrade downloaded from DFI
Latest VIA chipset drivers installed downloaded from VIA Technologies

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
I have never used the specific board you're using, nor the according chipset. I have however, used a ALi Alladin V chipset which gave me many issues. I would recommend these procedures (you might have tried them, but since it is not mentioned I will post it nonetheless)

Mount the CPU, 1 MODULE RAM, Graphics card, 1 HDD, 1 CDROM, Power Supply and try to install.

Go into the BIOS and disable ALL EXTREME timings, Ram CAS latency should be raised, Timings should be set to low or lowered, this is IMPERITIVE DISABLE MOTHERBOARD CACHE, ENABLE or DISABLE CPU cache or you can DEFAULT the BIOS ot regular settings. Disable the Serial Ports and Parallel Ports, Does your Mothebroard suport ACPI?

Can you ALSO boot from a IDE or SCSI or S-ATA PCI controller? (This can be found through the BIOS) I eventually had luck after using an old SCSI card and HDD to install windows bypassing IDE and such

That is all I can think of now. Good luck.

hello topherus! :)

had you ever success in running any os on this mainboard?

as KGB said, remove everything unnecessary while you are installing. no add-on cards, etc and lower your settings in the bios. no oc'ing! no external hw attached to your usb-connectors. is your cpu getting proper cooling (thermal grease, fan running)?

good luck and report back in case you did it (or are still stuck)!

XP should run fine on that mobo, assuming that the mobo and all the various components are in good operating condition. Could try downclocking if you are having problems; that may get you installed; but it won't solve the underlying problem.
