configuring fic va503+

Post by skinnie »

Hi ppl,I bought a fic va503+ pcb1.2 for my mmx 200 but I can't configure the dam jumpers..I tried all thing that say in the manual...
It runs @233 on my old pcchips m560...
If anyone can give me a pic with the jumpers set for 233 or 100x(any number under 3.5) would be very nice

Pages 16, 19, & 21 of the manual have the info you need to setup that board. Page 16 shows how you have to set jumpers for different types of RAM, (If using PC100 RAM or PC133 RAM, use the PC100 66Mhz setting, unless using 3 x 75 for your processor speed, in which case go to the PC100 75 Mhz setting).

Page 19 shows how to set the "Front Side Bus" speed and the "Multiplier", (in your case 66 Mhz x 3 = 200 Mhz; or 66 Mhz x 3.5 = 233 Mhz. or 75Mhz x 3 = 225 MHz - [fastest operation]), and page 21 shows how to set the processor voltage setting you will need. (2.8v.) NOTE : If that doesn't work, remember if you are overclocking your processor you may have to step the voltage up to 2.9v.

Finally would mention in passing that those boards are supposed to have the fastest memory operation of any Super 7. Bit of a waste to run an MMX in one of them. Should pick up a K6-3+ for it, then go up to 577 MHz, 600 Mhz, or 600+ Mhz.

I had already read the manual..and set the things as they are there..but I cannot run it good...If anyone could give a pic of this board configured for and 233 ou even for a 400 or 300 that would be very nice..because maybe I am doing something wrong..but I think I've already tried everything..

You may be using low quality RAM. FICs are fussy about that. Also check to make sure that what the print shows on the board is the same as what is in the manual. Also, if it is crashes & bluescreens or freezing that you are getting, check the condition of the board's caps.

hello,

could you describe the problem more in detail? does the system boot? do you reach windows' desktop or does it hang before? hang at what point? does the system beep when powered on? how often? .....

well..I can boot perfectly @200 but iot may be a default setting I don't know..in the cpu z it shows 200x1 wich is impossible..when I try to put as in the manual downloaded from the net 66x3 or 3.5 or 100x2 it doesn't even post..

maybe I get you wrong but from what you are telling I don't know where the problem is.

you say you are booting @200. how do you know? and within windows you say a tool is reporting 200x1 (which is a strange description to me but equals perfectly 200).

so where is the problem?

First of all an Intell MMX processor has a designed front bus speed of 66 MHZ. You may get away with running it @ 75 Mhz; but forget using 100 Mhz. I do not believe that any of those boards support a FSB of 200 Mhz, so where you are getting the 200x1 is beyond me.
The 3.5 x 66 Mhz however should work, provided thre caps are good and you have everything else set right.

I just wan~t so set it right..and yes intel mmx can work @100mhz bus..there are several cases of overclockers with intel mmx @100mhz bus..but for now I jsut want to do 66x3.5 as I always did in my pcchips..
of course the 200x1 is a bug or error..becasue the jumpers are not well set..I just want someone to show me a p~ic of a board like this with the jumpers set for a 233 ou a 300

Actually, they *can* often be run at 100MHz FSB. For a short time I ran a 200MHz MMX on one of my FIC boards, first at 2.0x100 then at 2.5x100. However, for what skinnie requested, I'm going with 3.5x66 at 2.8 volts.

All my diagrams assume you're holding the motherboard so that the DIMM slots are at the top and the ISA slots are at the bottom.

If you have PC 100 memory, and want to use 66MHz FSB do the following:

The SDRAM jumpers next to the CPU socket, from top to bottom:
(pin 1 is on the left)
(===== is jumpered . . . o is open)

Code: Select all

           -----------
SDRAM1:    | o ======|
           -----------
           -----------
SDRAM2:    | o ======|
           -----------
           -----------
SDRAM3:    | o ======|
           -----------
CLK4, which is located at the upper right of the board with the FSB jumpers, should be set as follows:

Code: Select all

           -----------
CLK4:      |====== o |
           -----------

If you have slower than PC100 RAM, do the following:

Code: Select all

           -----------
SDRAM1:    |====== o |
           -----------
           -----------
SDRAM2:    | o ======|
           -----------
           -----------
SDRAM3:    | o ======|
           -----------

Code: Select all

           -----------
CLK4:      | o ======|
           -----------

To set the FSB to 66MHz, use CLK1, CLK2, and CLK3, which from top to bottom are set as:

Code: Select all

           -----------
CLK1:      |====== o |
           -----------
           -----------
CLK2:      |====== o |
           -----------
           -----------
CLK3:      |====== o |
           -----------
To set the multiplier to 3.5x, use FREQ1, FREQ2, and FREQ3, near the cpu socket, from top to bottom as follows:

Code: Select all

           -----------
FREQ1:     |====== o |
           -----------
           -----------
FREQ2:     |====== o |
           -----------
           -----------
FREQ3:     |====== o |
           -----------

Finally, there's CPU voltage. The MMX should run 2.8 volts, so you set the VR jumpers, at the bottom right of the board, as follows: (row of x's is jumpered, o is open)

Code: Select all

   1     3     5     7
-------------------------
|  x  |  o  |  o  |  o  |
|  x  |     |     |     |
|  x  |  o  |  o  |  o  |
-------------------------
   2     4     6     8

For details, download this manual file and look at a4_2.pdf when it unzips.

My appologies on the 100 FSB. Didn't know they could do that. If you are going to put a K6+ in the board you need the JE4333 bios, as best I recall. King is the resident expert on FIC boards.
