hi, im new here.....
my rig:
AMD K6-2 350
DFI K6BV3+
SDRAM 256 MB
GeForce MX460 64 DDR
20 GB + 10 GB Seagate HDD
380W Generic PSU
Win98SE
last few years i OC it to 100Mhz x 4 for daily use (4-5 years OC). but now i put it on the standart clock.
my Q:
1. my old soundcard SoundBlaster 32 (ISA) is broken, i will buy new one.....
what brand+type of souncard do you suggest for my rig?
can it be under 10 us$?
2. how to optimize my rig so i can play WC3 ROC, i mean better FPS (if possible)
3. can i use via driver hyperion? which driver version work best in this mobo? and which version of geforce driver work best for gforce 460mx?
thanks and sorry for my spell

From your set up it looks as if your rig is rather cpu limited. With regards to better FPS you need to upgrade your cpu to, preferably, a K6+ line or K6-III processor. There are good articles on this. see below

there are plenty of other articles too on the net on sites such as anandtech and lost circuits.
I would go for a sound card from e-bay. I have a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 which works good for me and you will probably get one on e-bay for less than your budget requirement. However if you want to use the surround sound the speakers with the card it will cost you a lot more than your budget.

Something using a C-Media chip would use less resources than an SB chip.
Once the PCChips Lottery BBS comes back up, I'll post the chip ID that was mentioned there to me many moons ago.

i see.......
maybe i should build new rig if i want still to play wc3 (sempron maybe )
i already ask about SB in my retailer......
SB Live 5.1 = 25 $
Audigy Value = 35 $
Yamaha = 12 $
its always good to upgrade too higher rank of product (Audigy for longer investment, and sure my AtlhonXP 2500 can use it better than the onboard realtek)
but for now, i dont think my K6 can handle well with this Audigy.
so maybe i will go for SB 5.1 or Yamaha.
i dont know what brand/type using Cmedia Chip....
can you tell me?
thx a lot

according to that, the minimum system req for SB 5.1 is 500 MHz CPU
can K6-2 350 handle it?
thx

I know what you mean, back when I used my K62-500 everyday (for everything) I noted the poor performance (read as lag) watching DVD's with my ISA soundblaster 32AWE (which I still have BTW ), using a PCI soundcard made a visable difference... it's chip was the C-media CMI8738 (5.1)KachiWachi wrote:Something using a C-Media chip would use less resources than an SB chip.
Genius - Audio 5.1channel PCI
System requirements
* PII-266+
* 40Mb HDD+
* 16Mb system RAM
* PCI support
* CD-ROM
* Speakers
* Windows XP/ME/2000/98/95/NT, MS-DOS & Linux
BTW other than picking up a better CPU... upping the FSB may help a little with system response
as best driver for your gf 4mx460 I strongly suggest the lowest possible driver version available for that card. i.e. 28.32. the more recent the driver version the less it is optimized for the k6-series (regarding fps speed).
but undoubtedly nvidia did a good job in providing better dvd support in their most recent drivers.
