I found this on pci specification

further I found numerous hardware component manufacturers who state in their product description that the device is pci 2.2 compliant and mention the 3.3v in parentheses.

also I found at sig-pci website information that points in the same direction, i.e. that with pci 2.2 it is mandatory to supply 3.3v. here and here

so I would say that if gigabyte is right with praising the ga-5ax as pci 2.2 compliant then there is light on the horizon. if the same is true for the ga-5smm then the better.

That's great news Don and thankyou for spending the time on this. I just wish I had researched this a bit more before forking over the $$$$. Do you know exactly when this new PCI revision was implemented? I mean if it was post 2000 then Im guessing my board is in fact not compatible. All they say on the box for requirements is a standard 3.3 volt PCI slot and there's a picture and it says if yours looks like this then your good to go. Lieing bastards. I hope to god this comes back and bites them in the ass 100 fold and someone sues the pants off of them. The tech support guy was a complete numbnut. Best advice he could give me not even having asked what kind of motherboard i was using or anything was to go out and buy a new motherboard. What a joke. You know originally I had bought my 9200 from Tiger Direct thinking it was actually a newer directx9.0 part and I had done the research stating otherwise but I belie3ved what I saw in print and bought it later to find out they were the specs for a 9600 except the gpu and memory. Wish i had the time and money to take these lieing bastards to litigation.

Does Everest show what pci version your mobo supports? Anyhow, Im guessing that only revision 2.3 or later, which obviously would eliminate any k6 system, works with this card. It's funny though, the box doesnt list the k6 but does list everything from a duron to anything current which would have had the 2.3 version or later but the vision tek site does list the k6 so I dont know what to believe. Ill call them again tomorrow and hopefully get a hold of someone who can give me some answers.

PCI Local Bus Specification:

PCI version 1.0 was developed by Intel in 1991 but not released by a Standards body.
PCI revision 2.0; released in 1993; 32-bit, 33MHz bus.
PCI revision 2.1; released in 1995; 32-bit, 33MHz / 64-bit, 66MHz, Universal PCI for 3.3v or 5v cards
PCI revision 2.2; released 1998; minor clarifications / enhancements.
PCI revision 2.3; released in 2002; removed 5v only cards
PCI revision 3.0; released in 20xx; removed 5 volt interfaces altogether.

some other good news:

I took on the task to plug in the netgear wg311v2 wireless netcard adapter in my ga-5ax rev5.2

the box of the netgear card states that it needs a pci 2.2 slot.

result: IT WORKS! :)

this card DOES NOT work with an asus p5a 1.03 mainboard. when I remember correctly (back 2 to 3 years) I experienced anomalies like screen stayed black, or system freezed while booting, and when I finally (by luck I guess) was able to boot into windows (98se) it was impossible to make the card working. I know for sure that the p5a mainboard DOES NOT feature pci 2.2!

summing it up I would conclude from that experiences that the ga-5ax in fact is pci 2.2 compliant. if that can be translated into a radeon x1300 will work with a ga-5ax I can't say for sure.

pci 2.2 means support of both 3.3v and 5v adapters. It could be that the x1300 wants a pure 3.3v pci connector. but then ati (or the manufacturer of the card) misstates that it needs just a 2.2 pci connector while in fact it needs pci 3.0 (where 5v is completely removed).

l0new0lf, could you post here the picture of the pci-slot that is given in your card's manual?

Pedro, what would be the reason to use a x1300 PCI in a AGP capable motherboard? (I know, I know, some prefer PCI gfx cards in SS7's, more so than AGP) but what would it really accomplish?

As for you lonewolf, I just saw the thread you wrote on visiontek's forums (yuk you purchased the card from tigerdirect.com... ewww :P ) There is another person there with your card, PM him for some help. If its a no-go, then put the card up FS/FT in the forums. It seems clear to me it will not work with the specific PCI slot you have. Either upgrade the motherboard, or downgrade the card. Good Luck.

Lonewolf does not that 6200 PCI video card only have drivers for Win XP /2000 and not Win 98 S/E ??

Maybe that be the 1st problem.

Thankyou everyone for all the input. You guys seem to be the only ones who give a @#$%. I cursed out the same numbnut i spoke with yesterday this morning brite and squirrely. :) I finally got to speak with the "head numbnut" after being hung up on 3 x lol and the only thing this moron was stuck on was why I purchased a pci upgrade if I had an agp slot. **sigh** This was after I had told him about the super seven experience or lack there of and after that without even asking what o.s. I was running (xp btw) he said I should return it. I think the truth is these guys just dont know their ass from their elbow. Anyhow I wish his advice were that simple. Amazon seller wont touch this one with a 10-foot pole so I guess ill ditch it on e-bay and hopefully at least clear what I paid for it given I used some gift certificates. Anyhow, I did e-mail tech support at Soyo (I have 0 faith in that outfit too boot but that's a long long story )but I did it anyway to see if they knew if my pci slots were strickly 3.3 or the 3.3/5v flavor so hopefully theyll be able to shed some light on that but I have my doubts. I will never buy another vision tek product ever again. I actually paid $140 for the 9200 yes I know im an idiot and thank god they only got me for 105 on this piece of ****.

/Stands at doorway with arms at the ready.

You do recall my cousin needs a PCI card for his Dimension 2400 PC. But I'm not sure if he needs it. Best of luck getting it sold though man :) . And I saw at the other forum, the mod totally ignored your post and answered other mundaine stuff.

Anyone interested in this card? http://www.visiontek.com/products/cards ... 56pci.html
I know I made it sound like it was a really shitty card but apparently many people are able to overclock this card like crazy. :( Anyhow, just dont make the same mistake I did and assume your system is compatible. Triple check before hand!

gf 6200 on asus p5a

Post by DonPedro »

some good news!

I finally got the card (PNY Geforce 6200 PCI) and found some time to setup a system. to be honest I did it the "dirty" way. I had a harddisk lying around with win98se already installed on it. the downside is/was that the win98 installation was from a P4/VIA-chipset combination. so in order to save time I just put this disk in one of my p5a machines and let win98 do what it needs to get comfortable with the very different hardware. I was surprised to run into no severe problems.

right now the device manager does show that it has troubles with correctly installing the usb-device but for the moment I don't care. it is just for testing whether the pci 6200 works or not. with more time I will do a complete new installation.

I installed the card with the drivers that came with the card. instead of using dx9 as suggested I only installed dx8.

the card works without flaws in 2D mode. I checked the card with dxdiag. it passed the dx7 test but failed the dx8 test. I installed 3Dmark 2001 but this bench also aborted. I think this problems can be solved with using another driver and/or make a clean installation of win98.

I also ran some opengl benches and the card performed without any problem. I used the demo version of the game "dronez" which I can heartily recommend for benching (beware it is a hefty 62mb download). very nice graphics and a lot of setup-options (grapic candy wise) to play with.

if one wants to compare here are my preliminary results (from a not 100% working win98 installation):

test machine:
asus p5a, rev 1.03
384 ram, 22258
k6+450 @ 600mhz (hey, the first time ever that I was able to push it that high!!! :) (if that has something to do with using a pci graphics card I don't know)
no soundcard installed !!!

game settings:
32 bit color
z-buffer 24 bit
filter bilinear
texture color 32 bit
texture def. high
all texture compression modes ON

result 1 with dot-bump ON @ 1280x960
21.98 / 43 / 190 (min / avg / max fps)

result 2 dot-bump OFF
40.59 / 65.41 / 197.01

result 3 dot-bump OFF @ 1600x1200
31.25 / 48.16 / 111.89

at the moment I don't have access to my other p5a machine (gf3-ti 200 agp) (EDIT: in fact it is a ga-5ax rev. 5.2) to compare with. I will report on that as soon as possible.

congrats on the card Don. I kind of wish I had just gone with my gut and gotten this one right off the bat. Dont know why Visiontek had to make their 1300 such a pain in the @$$. Anyway once u get a clean install of windows post your 3dmark scores, ill be real curious how the card does on such an old chipset.

Don you sure it's a PNY 6200 PCI ? I couldnt find that card anywhere on their site. They have an agp version but i dont think it's compatible.

That PNY GeForce 6200 PCI actually have Win 98 S/E drivers ?

Does this mean also that the Asus P5a rev 1.03 have PCI 2.2 volt capability or that is it the PNY GF 6200 PCI is able to work on PCI 2.1 slots ?

More info please . :)

So there seems to be some PNY GF 6200 AGP 8x video cards that support Win 98 S/E drivers. Maybe their PCI version also has Win 98 S/E drivers available. :)

Several companies are coming out with these PNY / BFG / EVGA / and probably others at low prices also.....$40 US level 8)

Some tech site needs to put out a good test comparison among these and other competitors in the AGP level .

I will get one GF 6200 or a ATI Radeon PCI unit should they support Win 98 S/E ...I still believe they will make another PCI a little later that is even better.
