VA-503+ & K6-3+ & MTRRs

Post by swaaye »

I noticed that the Voodoo5 I have in this VA503 isn't setting up MTRRs for my K6-3+. So, I did some searching here and figured it out I think. I set MTRR0 as the largest memory address reserved for the Voodoo5, a 128MB one. Then I set MTRR1 as the address in use by the AGP controller. The AGP controller properties showed both the address I used for the Voodoo5 in MTRR0 along with another 128MB address.

I benchmarked with Wintune and showed a repeatable increase in 2D video performance from 60 MPixels/s to 66 MPixels/s (lol). I can't really tell if 3D improved at all. 3DMark99 didn't show anything notable. I'm not really sure how to test this one though. Low detail settings to stress CPU or high res settings to stress video? I didn't try the former yet.

I don't know for sure but I think that I've learned some time ago that the voodoo cards don't feature "agp-texturing". MTRR now is a means to enhance the speed of the agp-texturing process.

so if I am right then setting up MTRRs in your system will not yield any performance gain because the cards driver does not make any use of it.

swaaye -

You set one MTRR for the VGA region and one for the LFB.

VGA - 128k, Base Address 000A:0000, Write Combined
LFB - Depends on the video card present

Well it did make a difference for 2D, albeit a basically academic one lol.

I will try KachiWachi's suggestion.
