I need to know how to go about upgrading my AMD (K6) 3D

Post by samspin »

I have an PcChips motherboard which has an AMD (K6) 3D processor. Are there any other socket 7 processor upgrades available presently, which are more powerful than the AMD (K6) 3D. Presently, i am not certain exactly how powerful my AMD (K6) 3D processor is, but by restarting my computer i clearly see 350 MHz at the beginning, just before it goes to windows. If you know of an compatible AMD (K6) processor upgrade please let me know of it. My Motherboard is an M598 PcChips and not an M598 LMR PcChips motherboard. I bought my pc back in 1999 and the same AMD (K6) 3D processor is still with it. Exactly how powerful is my current AMD (K6) processor. I still know very little about computer language.

An M598 (V5/7/8/9) should be able to run a K6-2+ 450 OC'd to 600 MHz...using the 2K0519 BIOS.

See -> http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm

Without knowing the exact CPU you have installed, it will be hard to say what your current capabilities are.

Your board is PnP, so for the moment, we can assume your CPU is probably a K6-2 350 MHz (Chompers - Model 8 CXT).

K6-2-350 MMX 3DNow!
321 pins
350MHz (100x3.5)
2.2v/3.3v split

Have you downloaded the manual for this board (or do you have the original)?

I appreciate your help. Yes, i have downloaded the correct manual for my M598 PcChips motherboard just yesterday, after doing extensive searching on the internet for it. I can tell i have found the correct manual just by looking at the drawing of the motherboard in that manual. At first i downloaded an M598 LMR PcChips motherboard manual a few days before downloading the correct manual. I clearly recognized similarties in the structure of the motherboard but knew they weren't the same, and thats why i continued on searching for the correct manual.
Below is definitely my PcChips motherboards correct manual.

http://www.pcchipsusa.com/Manual/M598/M598.pdf

If it can help you determine my exact CPU please let me know. I haven't changed the CPU since buying my pc new in 1999. Just to the left of the CPU in the drawing, are the floppy disk port, and just to the left of that are connection ports for my pc's restart button and the pc's speaker, which is located on the bottom of my pc's case. I removed the speak cable and reset or restart cable, in my attempt to correct my pc's current problem, and i may have reconnected both in the wrong areas. If you know the exact areas to place them please help. My pc is an Carolina Computer which i believe is out of business. Do you know anything about Carolina Computers. Can i use Windows Me on that same computer. I can't tell just by reading that manual.
Again thank you.

You can either -

1) Remove the HeatSink/Fan and read the CPU markings.
2) Download and run Jan's CHKCPU here.
3) Download and run the AMD CPUID utility here.

It doesn't matter who assembled your PC...just what the motherboard is.

You can use any OS that your CPU/RAM combination will support.

@PC's restart button and the PC's speaker - J2?

@ Kachi Wachi : He means the wires from the front panel to the lower front corner of the board. Apparently he is concerned that he may have reconnected them improperly.

@ Samspin : On most motherboards you will find fine print indicating which of those various wires, (Power LED, Reset Switch, Speaker, HDD LED or IDE Led, Green LED, etc.) goes where. Do not be confused by the designation "Green LED", which is typically "Yellow" the word "Green" refers to energy saving. The "Power LED" is the green one. Those boards which don't have the layout printed on the board, should show the proper position to hook up the wires in the manual.

Re processor, KachiWachi is right I believe in saying you seem to have a K6-2 350. He also said that the board would support a K6-2+450 which can be overclocked to 600 MHz. I have not checked to see if your board will support that, but he is quite an expert so it is safe to assume that it will. I would add to that however that if the board will support a K6-2+ 450, then it will also support a K6-3+ 450ACZ, which is pretty well as far as you can go w/ that motherboard. These K6-(2 or 3) + processors will in most cases easily overclock up to 600 MHz. The K6-3+ ones are better than the K6-2+ ones because they have a larger on die cache. i.e. more memory built into the processor. That makes them somewhat faster generally speaking, because the on die memory is 6 times faster than the motherboard cache, which in turn is faster than RAM, which in turn is faster than HDD access. The more on die cache you have, the less often things get delayed searching for data in slower forms of storage.

I need help finding the correct AMD (K6) CPU for my pc.

Post by samspin »

You have been a great help, and if you can help out further it will be appreciated. If you can visit this ebay page,
http://computers.listings.ebay.com/AMD_ ... List?kw=K6

can you find the correct AMD (K6) 2 or 3+ CPU for my motherboard which is an PcChips M598, and let me know the exact one or one's, i can use for my motherboard. Below is my motherboards manual.

http://www.pcchipsusa.com/Manual/M598/M598.pdf

I realize it has to be compatible and money is an issue. My current CPU is an AMD (K6) 3D.

Thank you

samspin,

according to the manual and to jan steunebrink's website where you will find a link for a bios that supports k6-2/3+ cpus you should be able to plug in any k6-2/3 or K6-2/3+ cpu.

the highest k6-2/k6-3 models come with 550mhz
the "+" versions are also available up to 550mhz; there exists also a k6-2+/570 which according to my tests has higher oc'potential than the 550ers.

@ Samspin : Almost any of the processors on those two pages of e-bay listings will work. Some however are better than others. I am going to PM you on this subject.

I would buy the CPU new if possible.

Here are three places to try -

K6-III+ at Upgrade Ability
http://www.upgradeability.com/K6plus/index.htm

JLM Technologies
http://www.jlmtech.net/catalog/index.php

AMD K6-III+ 450MHz CPU
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_comp_amdk63plus.html

Thanks.

He already found a better processor at a better price if he buys it.

EDIT : Well its gone now; but on those two pages of processors he asked people to look at and tell him what he should get was a K6-3+475ACZ w/ the bid sitting at $26.00. I PMed him to tell him about it; but he never read the PM. Its still sitting in my outbox. Personally never even knew they made K6-3+475ACZs; but it was real, the enlarged photo was clear enough to read the heat spreader cap plainly. Such a shame!! Was tempted to bid on it myself; but that wouldn't have been fair to him.

Oh well, such is life.

That makes two of us Jim. Never heard of a 475 model either. IMHO if this guy is still interested in upgrading personally Id stick to either flavor of the K6+ that is a minimum of 500Mhz and if it's an acz all the better. Ive never had one that wouldnt do 600 that was 500 or faster but I did have two 450s that wouldnt go that extra mile.
