Size does matter!!

Post by Stedman5040 »

No this thread is not about the use of via gra it is about L3 cache size for VIA MVP3 chipsets.

I have a TMC Ti5VGF board with 2M of onboard cache and it is being benched directly against the monster EP-MVP3G2 with 1M of onboard cache.

The other hardware is set up as follows

K6-3+/550 @ 5.5x100
384Mb memory (3x128) Hynix cl2 ram at 2-2-2-5
WD 20gig 5,400rpm HDD
Intel i740 8Mb graphics
Creative SB live 5.1
Compac NIC
Samsung CD/RW
4x interleaving set as on
Windows Me

All WPCREDIT Tweaks the same for each board.

Unfortunately the TMC board is not good enough to survive all of the wpcredit tweaks that the Epox board can take so the Epox board has still got a bit of gas left to play with. Anyway the figures are as follows

Bench------------------------TI5VGF----------EPMVP3G2
Everest
MR-----------------------------280----------------266
MW----------------------------152----------------142
ML-----------------------------140!!!!-------------245
Sandra Membench
ALU----------------------------187---------------176

Integer inst-----------------175------------------175

Mem fillrate c++-----------173-----------------168
Mem rep movsd------------176-----------------171
Memfpu 64bit---------------172-----------------165
Mem assembly 32 bit------169-----------------162
Mem fillrate assem 64bit--174-----------------168
Mem fillrate mmx 32bit----175----------------171
Mem fillrate mmx 128bit---175----------------170
Insert sort-------------------7--------------------7
Shell sort--------------------280-----------------260
Merge sort------------------505-----------------488
heap sort--------------------307----------------274
quick sort-------------------1056---------------1022
lge obj quick sort method--245----------------220
FFT standard----------------567----------------560
FFT optimised---------------759----------------715

I really do not know where that Everest latency figure comes from. That is weird! Anyway it looks as if 2M cache does help a lot with these benches. My guess is that the EP-MVP3G5 must be worth getting when one appears on e-bay. By the way I did manage to get some benches on the TMC board with all of the wpcredit tweaks, but it was not able to get all the way through hotcpu tester or through superpi 1M without crashing. The results I got for what they are worth are as follows and they give you a taster of what may be achievable on the G5.

Everest MR/MW/ML 305/157/135
Superpi 256k 56s
Sandra membench 197/196

I am awaiting delivery of a TMC Ti5VGA board. This also may have 2m as an option for the cache and also has UDMA66. Let us hope that its cache is in better shape.

Stedman :)

Interesting. SP3 is running now, (DFI 2Meg board), once I finish setting things up, will do some benches.
