HP Pavilion 4430 ideas needed.

Post by KGB »

Found me a nice mini HP Pavilion 4430 K6-2 Box. Had no memory chips installed in it but, the unit was in fair to new condition. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... e=bph04991 <- Is the link for the system.

I took out the 2GB Quantun hard drive and replaced it with a faster 8GB Seagate Barracuda III. I also installed 2 128 MB PC100 Memory Modules. The board only supports 256 Max and uses either 2 or 4 MB for integrated SiS graphics display. Unbelievably, the HP came with a Hauppauge TV/FM tuner card and works well with my Asus P3B-F. I meddled around with some jumpers, took out the 300mhz K6-2 that came with the system. Placed a 500mhz k6-2 AFX I found in an old IBM. The fastest I got it to run was 400 (@ 2.0v) @ 66mhz and multiplier @ 6. The motherboard also has specs to run at 83, but the jumper pins were not soldered onto the motherboard, (Board seems to be made by Asus by the way). I upgraded the Gfx with a Voodoo2 and the rig also has its own Modem/Rockwell Sound combo card. I have 1 PCI slot left, I'll probably intall a ethernet card and be done with it. The board has issues when I set GFX memory to 4MB (discoloration, greenish hue), but works fine with 2MB selected through the BIOS.

I am wondering what this system will be able to do? Anyone have any ideas for it? Suggestions? Win2K would be nice, have enough ram. However the Voodoo2 would not be so compatible as it is with win98se. Linux run well on these machines? I have red hat 7.2 with mandrake, any problems which could arise due to expansion card incompatibilities?

Don't know if you want to go that far; but I have swapped out the board from an Aptiva and replaced it w/ a full blown Super 7. You could probably do the same w/ your HP.
