Which K6-x+ on ASUS P5A-b?

Post by hiscariot »

Hi everybody! My name is Alessandro

I'm new in the forum (i've already read several posts). i'm here because i've a question for you.

I own this nice PC:
ASUS P5A-B mainboard rev 1.04, bios ver 1011 005
AMD K6-III 450Mhz AFX
RAM 768 MB PC100
3DFX Voodoo3 3000 tv-out
2 PCI souncards (Creative ct4810 for real DOS and Cmedia 6.1 CH for WIN and Linux)

I've built this pc for media-center (WinXP and Linux in GeexBox livedistro) and (retro)gaming on TV, BUT when it plays movies is a bit slow, so i was thinking to to upgrade CPU.. Which one's do you suggest to me??
AMD k6-2+ 550 or k6-III+ 450 (i van't find a k6-III+ 550)?? Will i benefit of this change in multimedia apps?

(sorry for my english)
Thaks!
Alessandro

If you really want a K6-3+550, there is a NEW one in an e-bay store in Taiwan for a mere $283.00 U.S. Other than that, I personally would get a K6-3+ 450ACZ or a K6-3+500ANZ if I were you. The reality of it is most K6-3+ and K6-2+ chips will overclock to 600MHz so there is not that much difference between them regards what you can clock w/ them. The K6-3+ has extra cache so it will be faster at any given speed for most purposes. I would avoid the K6-3+400ATZ, however, because though some of them will clock 600MHz, generally they are less likely to.

He's already got a K6-III 450...

I'd try overclocking him first to see what he is capable of.

Free is always better. :P

hello alessandro,

i would prefer the 2+ 550acz. there are some cheap ones in germany

+ shipping to italy not more than 20 euros.

these cpus do easily 600mhz, maybe you should try out 105/110 fsb with the 5.5x multi. best price/gain correlation for me ...

I have a K6-2+/550ACZ and got it up to 630Mhz (105x6) on the Asus P5A board rev 1.04.

Try this link which gives you some benchmark results of K6-2+ cpu's at various speeds vs a K6-III @ 500MHz.

Thanks for your replies,

do you think i'll have benefit upgrading my k6-III 450 to a K6-2+ 550 in multimedia apps (dvx, xvid, avi, DVD and so on)?

Personally, I don't think you won't benefit much. The higher speed of the K6-2+ is neutralised by the extra on-die cache on the K6-III+. I would recommend overclocking the K6-III+ to 5.5x100 for 550MHz or 5x112 for 560MHz. You would benefit much more and just about every K6-III+ CPU out there will hit 560MHz without problems :)

*edit* sorry didn't read that you had a regular K6-III. Those are quite difficult to overclock and run very very hot (especially the 2.4v versions) and you wouldn't see much difference going to a K6-2+ 550. If yours is a 2.4v version, I would go the K6-2+ route (if it's not too expensive) just to get your temps down  If you can get your hands on a K6-III+, that would give you the best performance by a long shot. :)

It rather depends on how much money is available for his upgrade. He has a K6-III/450AFX which with good cooling should reach 500MHz, but will probably not get much higher. If this cpu reaches this speed he will need to run a K6-2+ at 600 or higher to gain any benefit and even that will probably not be noticeable other than that the voltages, power, heat generation etc will be a lot more comfortable. The great benefit of the K6-2+ is the greater availability at lower cost. They do cost less than half the price of the K6-III+'s.

Of course if money is no object then go and buy a K6-III+ 450 or 500 if you can get one. All of my 450's and the 500 reach 600MHz stable with no problems at 2.1V or less. One of the 450's gets 600Mhz at 1.85V.

Generally a K6-III+ is worth an extra 50 to 100Mhz of performance over the K6-2+ at the same speed. So a K6-2+ at 600 performs in the area of the K6-III at 500 to 550Mhz apart from in functions where raw speed is of benefit.

I first started out with a K6-2+, but wasn't really satistified until I got hold of a K6-III+. Just had to see what it could do.

hmm ... to tell the truth - you have allready got a good cpu. with the 2+ your apps will benefit, for sure, but for some 10% maybe. ! and not only the cpu is responsible for system performance! maybe an ata133 card would do much more ...
believe me, its not worth spending money for best and expensive socket7 cpus, if you can get a pIII for lower prices.
