Which AT supersocket7 mainboard...

Post by spacemarine »

I'm searching an AT format supersocket7 mainboard that has 2 mb of cache, at least 4 slot pci, agp both 2x and 4x (2 different voltage support) and that support HD with more then 8.4 gb (at least 40 would be good).
It should have 1 or 2 isa slots too.

Does it exist?
Which is? (are if more then one :) )

there is no socket7 board that supports agp 4x and realy has an agp slot.
the only AT board that fits is the dfi k6bv3+/66 (as far as i know). hdd support up to 137gb.

Another thing:
does it have usb?

I really need some usb port on that rig, and if possible i would avoid to fit a pci slot with an USB card, because i need them the most empty possible (it's for a 3d pc retrogaming rig project, with a rendition verite, a 3dfx voodoo1 and a matrox m3d, together with an Aureal vortex2 , an Sb awe64gold isa and an isa lan card; have yet to decide if i will use a verite v1000 pci or a v2200 agp)

Yes the DFI K6BV3+/66 meets ALL your requirements except that it only has 2x AGP. I have 4 of them. As far as USB is concerned, it has 2 onboard USB1 ports. Be careful hooking them up though, because AT USB ports tend to be proprietary, and the wiring pattern varies from one board to the next. Have to check the manual to see which wire goes where. Also not all of the K6BV3+/66 boards have 2Meg cache. Some have 2Meg, some have 1Meg so be carefull when you are buying to get the kind you want.

The mobo end of of the cable ends in a plastic plug, which has little tabs that you can lift gently w/ a small screwdriver so you can pull the wires out of the plug shell and rearrange them. As for which wire goes where, the easiest way to be sure about that is to have 2 identical USB brackets, (ports), one of which you are already using on another mobo.

What you do is lookup the wire positions in the manual for the board which already has a USB Port working on it; and in that manner determine from the manual which wire is which. On the DFI, Pin1 on both ports is +5v; Pin2 on both ports is -Data; Pin 3 on both Ports is +Data; Pin 4 on both ports is Ground; & Pin5 on one Port is also Ground while Pin5 on the other Port is the key. Once you have looked up the wire positions for a board which has a working USB Port on it, you can determine which wire is which and put them in the appropriate places in the plug shell for the other USB bracket to be used on the DFI. That is the safest way I know of to do it.

Further on the subject of proprietary wiring of ports, PS2 mouse ports are the same way. The mouse end of the cable is standardised; but the mobo end is not. They too are proprietary, and vary in wiring pattern from board to board. So again you sometimes have rearrange the wiring,; and in a few cases you even have to change the plastic plug shell too. e.g. ASUS P5A-B uses a PS2 mouse port which has 2 rows of 4 pins, (Some Missing). Other manufacturers may use a single row of 4, 5, or 6 pins. Though they all have only 4 wires.

For ps2 is easier to use an at to ps2 adaptater toghether with a cable with 2 ps2 ports at end imho. Im already using an at to ps2 for keyboard, but yet searching a ps2 cable doubler.

some other interesting features of the dfi:
ata66 (udma 4) and k6+ cpu support. the normal dfi k6bv3 (rev. A) does not support it at all.
both accept 256mb ram modules, the pll is able to provide 133mhz fsb (but only with the /3 divider ... ).

The PLL also supports 140MHz and 150MHz though I have never tried to use them. The board however does not have "Settings" for any FSB speed over 100MHz. You have to use software, (e.g. CPU Cool), to get any FSB speed over 100MHz. Also, re PS2 Mouse Ports, it's actually pretty easy to figure out which wire goes where as long as you have another board with a working PS2 Mouse Port installed.
