Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
Don Pedro,
I'm struggling to achieve your results with a Ga5-ax 5.2 and a K6-III+@605 (5.5x110).
I'm using the same vga chip, a 5900XT from Leadtek, bot I can't really match your results.
I obtain 3400 with XP SP3, 2500 (ouch!) with win2000 SP4 and with Win98SE and your drivers I get something less of 3300....
How can you hit 4000?
Please let me know if you can.

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
I haven't touch my k6-system for about 6 years now but I will try to help you.
First things which come into my mind if I remember correctly
- the ga 5ax 5.2 does not allow "GAT mode 2" which deals with AGP handling, it only offers GAT mode 1; the p5a board does both; mode 2 gives a boost of at least 10%, but I will try to find out and report back
- the chipset was tuned via cprset-tool (memory performance, 2-2-2-4 timings, etc.)
- usb-capability was turned off: usb eats memory bandwith but also gat mode 2 needs it to be turned off because of stability issues
- the p5a board was only equipped with vga-card, lan-card and sound-card (cheap soundblaster card); the more add-on cards you put into your system the lower memory bandwith ...
I will now revive my k6-system and report back what else I can find. stay tuned.

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
With ali AGP tool I can set GAT mode 2, but I don't know if it is functional.
I will reinstall win98SE WITHOUT unofficial service packs and I will use a single 256mbyte sticks (I used 1gb of RAM).
I did not optimize with vpcredit, I don't remember how to do it

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
yes, I was wrong in my recollection.
What is not working with ga-5ax mainboard is AGP 2x. It works in AGP 1x mode only.

Uhm...
Sandra and system info of nVidia control panel both show AGP 2X enabled...

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
what does ali agp tool say ("Status")?
edit:
Also, when you run win2k or xp, please check your cpu-speed (also fsb) with cpu-z - tool. I remember having troubles under xp/2k - the fsb-speed jumps between 100 and 50 mhz. I never found out why this happens.
How much memory speed do you get with everest-tool (v 2.20)? memory read should be around 350mb/s or better, write speed 130mb/s or better, delay below 200 nsecs.
what about the speed of your 5900xt card?
core-speed?
mem-speed?

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
I will reinstall w98se today and I will post the results.
But on xp and 2000 the fsb is 110mhz rock solid (k6-3+ ANZ 1.8v).

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
OH, I am surprised to hear that. I never got satisfactory results on w2k/xp with cpu-speeds higher than 450mhz.
Also, did you install servicepack 4(a) on w2k? and svp3 on xp?
Did you install 2k/xp with special treatment of power management? My memory serves me bad here but I have the impression that Jim once posted that it was necessary to deactivate power management in the bios and have for example w2k installed by selecting a machine type very early in the setup process that also let the system know that no power mgmt is available. I never tried it that way ....

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
Today I will be back from work earlyer, so I can complete the installation of Win98SE.
I will test this first.
I got the fx5900xt, and I will use your 52.16 drivers with ali drivers 1.81
Then I will test a weird Radeon 9800xt 256mbyte 128bit.
It has Samsung rams rated for 300mhz DDR and 3.3ns, packing a real R360 chip; I suppose it is a 9600xt beefed with a R360... Or sort of.
I know it will be a pain in the @ss, but I remember I correctly configured a 9800SE@pro with XP and this motherboard using catalyst 6.6 and 6.1, maybe I can do the same on Win98SE.
Do you remember if you installed any update at all on it?

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
I am using ali apg 1.66 (w98).
If need be I can provide both drivers (ali, nvidia). Just let me know ...
Today I checked my w2k and xp installation of my p5a. both systems sit on the same harddrive together with win98.
In win98 everything is fine, but as I said earlier: both w2k and xp have serious troubles with fsb-speed fluctuating. w2k is somehow fixed at 50mhz, xp oscillates between 5 and 100 mhz and i have no idea why and how to solve.

Re: Maybe I found the King of the hill??
Update,
3 hours trying to install properly the Radeon card.
It is really promising, but it crashes 3dmark2001se.
I installed ali 1.9 AGP that seems to be stable, much more than 1.6, but I am not able to find a good Catalyst.
Someone at Vogons forum used the 3.8 version that contains vxd files, but I am not able to find it anywhere.
I want to try them before giving up and install the 5900xt.
My fsb is really solid, maybe your clock generator is buggy?
