can i put this in my mobo?
i am relatively new w/ computers. i just got this old one from my friend and i wanted to make it a little better. the mobo is an asus p5a and it has an amd k6-2 300afr in it. i dont know the specs on the mobo so i dont know what i can put in it. will a k6-2 550agr work? i dont know if there is something different about it that makes the mobo not support it. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Welcome to the forum.
Your motherboard is perfectly compatible with all the K6-2 and K6-III models, including the K6-2 550.

Peter is right. Rev 105 & 106 boards are considerably more of a headache than Rev 103 & 104. That is not to say you can't use them, you can, and with some considerable gains in chipset speed; BUT it is a real headache getting one of the newer K6+ processors to work properly on them, for reasons that I believe are related to the 1011 Bios.

Win2KPro FTW!
Unfortunately... due to the current climate of malware (and other malicious programs) attempting to access your PC over the internet, precautionary firewalls, anti-spy/virus applications are a MUST to ensure a 'secure experience'
It has been my experience that once a system (of the proposed generation) is loaded up with an OS plus and all the necessary anti-malware protection you can get... it's responsiveness suffers somewhat, hence the Win2KPro suggestion
Alternatively a spritely Linux Distribution like Ubuntu's 7.04 would serve you well, in the 3 weeks I've had this distro' I've only been back to a MS partition once!

I would try XP to see if it works OK on your machine. I think it is the better of the two OSs, assuming your rig is up to it. Need lots of RAM, at least 256Meg, preferably 512Meg, and preferably fast RAM i.e. PC100 CL2 or PC133CL3 - PC100CL2 and ideally PC133 CL2 for best results. I would not use service pack 2; but rather service pack 1a, because 2 causes problems with some machines. Also ideally, should you be able to get one, you ought to get a K6-3+ processor, as they are much more overclockable than a plain K6-3. i.e. 600+Mhz usually.

Or even a K6-2+ they also have 128kb of onboard cache as opposed to the 256kb of the K6-III or K6-III+ variant. K6-2+ should also be clockable to 600Mhz plus if you get a 500, 533, 550 or 570. At 600MHz a K6-2+ will perform faster at most tasks than a K6-III at 500MHz and can be equal to a K6-III operating at 550MHz at others. You should find it a lot easier to find a K6-2+ cheaply on e-bay for instance.

Stedman's right. Just to clarify : Best : K6-3+, Next best : K6-2+. Next best K6-3, then finally K6-2 in that order.
