I would not remove the heatspreader from these CPUs. The cores are very fragile and crack super easily. I've tried it and it got me no higher speed, but did give me a dead K6-III+ after it cracked enough. It was impossible to keep it from chipping, even with some foam tape on the chip to keep the heatsink from angling much.

These CPUs don't put out much heat. It's just not a limiter on their clock-ability. The architecture just can't handle high clock speeds. I use a large copper Thermalright SLK700 Athlon XP cooler. It keeps the K6-III+ about as cool are it can be lol. But with 2 different 3+'s, I've been barely able to get 616 MHz stable regardless of volts...

Had to clip off part of that 3-prong clip there to get around annoying Socket 7 capacitors. Heh.

It's just a Athlon XP cooler that was top-of-the-line for a little while. Socket A coolers usually will fit on Socket 7, but the triple-clip things often get in the way of capacitors right next to Socket 7 sockets. I just hacked part of it off and on it went.

Newegg has a few fun ones yet. Tough to tell if you'll have problems with any of these lol. I'd go with taller over wider though, for sure.

Edit: don't think about the big Zalman coolers though cuz they don't use a clip but use the 4 mounting holes on most Socket A boards.
