fic503+ seems dead

Post by stevenaaus »

CPU arrived today, after a couple of weeks. It came well packaged and in
good condition, and after straightening more than a few leaning pins, it went
fine. Seems to hit 600MHz at stock voltage on my AX59pro without any
hitches. They're a great CPU alright :>

Earlier, i toasted my fic503+. Getting it ready , with a k6-2/500 in place, after
a few minutes it started playing up. Looking around, the ancient fan was
sometimes stopping, and after that the best i could get was a single short
repeating beep, whether i have memory installed or not. I guess it
overheated and took out the board. Tried all jumpers, video cards, EDO ram,
various bus speeds and reseting bios. It's dead. The really annoying thing is
the fucking k6-2/500 i was using at the time.... fine.

Any ideas what died on board , or if i can save it ? Looking on the web...
Award beep codes seem fairly useless.

The 503+ I had liked cooking processors even when set to 2v. My guess is that the voltage regulators were shot but I never got round to testing the input voltage to the cpu. Glad to hear your cpu hits 600. It probably will hit 618 with the fsb set to 103.

Does cpucool support your pll chip. If it does you may be able to software overclock to 103 or 105 if your pll chip supports the speed.

I've never known the details of software overclocking, and thought you'd lost your marbles: "Does cpucool support you pII chip" Pentium II, wtf.

But, thanks for the heads up. i identified the PLL chip as W127H, which cpucool says it supports (W127). Unfortunately, i'm a linux guy really, and after a quick look there seems little support.
