Post by l0new0lf »

I fired up my socket seven system yesterday and the pci slots on my Tekram board were dead. Ive tried everything but I couldnt get the slots to work. Money's tight and buying anything even a rep;acement board is out of the question for the interium so im partng with my beloved k6-3+ which I paid $100 for two years ago from the late Upgradeability.com site. The listing can be found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0310974344 and I just hope it fetches a decent price.

Wish you had posted this a few days back. I've been needing a few K6-plus CPUs and I've been having to get them from China (a guy on eBay is selling K6-2+ 550 chips for about $10 each). I still put in a bid, though. :D

Posting this from a Presario 1200 XL118 laptop that recently got a brain transplant of a K6-2+ 550 and a fast hard drive. The remarkable thing is that it's actually a pretty responsive machine and it only took $35 in parts. There's still life in the K6 yet!
FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

Your K6-III+ found a new home in a Compaq Presario 1200XL-110 in place of the original K6-2 475 that was in there. I'm running it at 500 MHz @ 2.0v, although I want to see if it will run on 1.8 at some point. It goes fine at 550 @ 2.0, but at 550 it gets too hot under load.

I replaced the original CD-ROM in the laptop with a DVD, installed the (K6-optimized) Compaq DVD software that shipped with OEM models that had a DVD, and it plays without dropping a single frame. Got to love those old K6-plus chips.

DonPedro,

Compaq apparently packaged this with the DVD-enabled Presario laptops: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft ... 28&lang=en

I couldn't get DVDs to play without skipping frames using VLC or any of the other open-source programs, not even in Linux (I'm dual-booting Puppy 4.1.2 and 98SE), but this software works wonderfully. I'm almost certain it is optimized for 3DNow because it is packaged only with K6-based Presarios with DVD drives.

ok,

went there and realize your lappy has an ati-card which is the reason why - when paired with ati's dvd-program - the card does most of the mpeg-2 decoding and so frees the cpu of most of this task.

when it comes to dvd-decoding ati has a big advantage over nvidia cards and under this premise is the better choice for slow(er) computers like our socket7-systems.

Actually, my laptop doesn't have the ATI graphics. The link I sent you is for the Presario 1687, which is a laptop that does have ATI graphics and a DVD-ROM standard. I have a 1687, but it doesn't work.

The laptop I used this software with is a 1200XL-110, which didn't come with a DVD-ROM, and which uses the Trident Blade graphics chip. I put the DVD in myself, and installed the software, and it works despite the rather weak graphics chip.

jsc1973,

is there a way you could make this dvd-program available to me, zipped into one file? for example via hfs or icq?

I'm sure I could, but you can just as easily download it from Compaq using the link I provided. There's nothing you have to do other than just click on the download link.
