K6-2 533 overclock question?

Post by Jake »

Hi ...trying try to get this 533 k6-2 upto 550 here and something is fighting back ...

Specs:
ms5169 rev 2.1
768 meg
st34014 hd

to make a long story short, it runs like a swiss watch with these settings:

95 mhz bus
5.5 multiplier
2.2 vcore

which yields 524 mhz ~

if I set the fsb to 100mhz and vcore to 2.4, I can get it to boot at 550, but loading large files and apps over 3meg ~ fails....

Hopefully somebody can offer a clue where to look? So glad I found this web site, you all are a wealth of info .....

Post by Jim »

If the processor is a good one, it should be able to do 550 Mhz at 2.3 v. Seems it isn't a good one. You could try using "Rain" to see if that helps. I have had some processors that needed that to work.

Any K6-2 running above 500 MHz is a factory overclock. Once you go above that, the chip might go just fine up to a point, but that's as far as it's going to go, no matter how much voltage you feed into it.

I have even worked with K6-2 550 systems before that had random lockups and crashes for no apparent reason. I would set those systems back to 500 MHz and the problems would go away. And this was with legitimate, stock K6-2 550 MHz chips, not ones that had been overclocked.

I'd rather deal with Cyrix MII processors than the last few speed grades of the K6-2. If you really have to have 550 MHz for some reason, then do what Jim said and try Rain. But if you want it that badly, I'd just buy a K6-2+ 550 off eBay for $15 and get 30 percent better performance.
FIC VA-503+, Rev. 1.2, AMD K6-III+ 450@550MHz, 80GB Seagate ATA-100, 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV, TB Montego II Quadzilla, Win98se, 384MB PC100

Compaq Presario 1273, AMD K6-III+ 450@400MHz 1.8v, 40GB Samsung 5400RPM, extremely hacked Win98SE, 288 (yes, 288!) MB RAM
(Also an AMD FX-8350, which does the heavy lifting these days...)

Hi ...

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

Actually, this whole project has been a series of things I was told would not work with this motherboard.....rev 2.1

Was told nothing above a 400 mhz cpu...one day I find a 475 k6-2 ...it worked

Was told no way past 32gig barrier (no bios updates) ...then one day was poking around Wims bios forums and wonder of wonders V 3.8 B3 ....now booting from a 40 gig seagate.

All that aside, I think what the issue is, not one of the 4 processors I have had in this thing liked the external cache setting on this motherboard.
I could be wrong, but just got this suspicion, if I could find a utility to control the settings of that ...it just might work. Heat has never been an issue ...have one of those 1 1/4 deep aluminum heat sinks on it...always just luke warm to the touch.

But anyway, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Try WP Credit if you think that is the problem. You can find it in the downloads section here, and you can also find my post about how to use it HERE :

Not knowing what chipset the board you are using has, I am not sure what PCR files you will need for it, but you can find Don Pedro's SIS PCR file in the downloads section here, and you can find the most complete set of Intel, VIA and ALI PCR files at the site, at this link, though you will have to scroll down through the thread some to find them :

I used big sinks too, but 550 is Very fast for a plain K6-2, try Rain just to see if it makes a difference. One other thing is you ram. I realize you are using the 100 Mhz FSB speed, but just in case, you could try slowing your ram timings a bit and see if that helps. This is certain : You can't disable the onboard cache without taking a huge performance hit with a plain K6-2. Not sure what cache settings are available through WPCredit for the ALI chipset. There are some, that is for sure.

i think, your L2 cache chip does not sustain 100 mhz fsb.
95 is the maximum ... to be sure, please post its readings. you will find it near the cpu / ram slots. your k6 533afx should definitly do 550 @ stock.

Jim....

you guys are genius....first things first...

WpCredit says that cache is present irrespective of what bios setting I use...must be windows know's about it....

But more importantly, found a copy of Rain and installed it...simply amazing, and I do mean amazing. Was able to boot and run at 550mhz for 1/2 hr.. So I stressed the system at 100% cpu usuage and was able to force a crash after about 5 to 8 minutes (software crash, not system) System stayed up and running. I would not have believed heat was an issue, but I was getting a hot spot at the one corner of the heat sink, which tells me I did not get the heat sink compound spread around good enough. (one of those 2am bleary eyed installs)

One thing for sure, this cpu likes everything perfect for overclocking, but with rain, am now sure this is can be done.

I really appreciate you guys offering all the tips....thanks.. :D

@ Jake : You will have to ask Stedman or Don Pedro what are the best WPCredit settings for the ALI chipset, cause I don't know them. Stedman does though. Just to get an idea what you can do with WPCredit; see this thread, (VIA Chipset) :

http://www.k6plus.com/index.php?name=PN ... pic&t=1406

Here is a copy of Stedman's WPCredit settings. Be aware though that he is using a K6-2+ processor in his ALI chipset board. Also the "Periods" are just for spacing, to try to make the chart line up properly.

Hi ..

Kalabok ...sorry, you where posting the same time I was, and I did not see your reply till this morning. What you ask is part of the issue...Nothing I have tryed shows that cache. Other than WpCredit ...

Jim ...Fyi ...Mother board Doc's

"Cache Memory
• Supports 512K Pipelined Burst cache memory.
• Cacheable Area: 128/512 MB."

Also; location 41 is the wpcredit location for setting that cache..mine defaults to 04...

From 1541 pcr file..

"[41:6]=Fast DRAM Read (1/0 Enables/Disables)
[41:5]=L2 Cache Bank Select (0=1 Bank 1=2 Banks)
[41:4]=L2 Cache Type 0=Pipelined Burst SRAM 1=MoSys DRAM Cache
[41:3]=L2 Cache Size 00=256k 01=512k 10=1Mb 11=None
[41:2]=As Above
[41:1]=TAG[9-8] Config 0=Disabled 1=Enabled
[41:Zero] =External TAG Enable (0/1 Enables/Disables)"

I am a newbie here, and do not know Stedman or Don Pedro, hopefully they will drop by and share their expertise....I just appreciate the help.

There should be more than that. There are tag ram settings too that are available through WPCredit. By the way, given what you said before, I guess step 1 is do a better job on spreading the heat sink compound. You could PM either Don Pedro or Stedman5040. I am sure they will respond once they see what you are doing. They are both helpfull guys.

WPCredit allows you to change settings that arn't in the Bios if you follow the instructions in the link I gave you; and WPCrset, (which is on page 2 in the downloads section), allows you to create a setting file that autoloads at boot once you have your settings worked out.

Well, if you are happy with what you are getting out of it, then fine. I know with a K6-3+ 450ACZ, WPCredit allows you to approximately double your Memory Write performance, and increase your Memory Read by about 50%. Worth looking at if you are trying to get performance.

Hi ..

Was just gloriously happy to get a stable system to tinker with....cooler master fan has a more well defined vortex area around the blades.

Hot Cpu tester is reporting ..

mem read : 400 mb/sec
mem write: 372 mb/sec

Don't know how accurate that is, but the system feels light nimble.
