Lucky Star 5MVP3 AT........ Is it any good

Post by Ye Olde Forum »

[Desert Dog]

Posted 5-25-2001 08:18

Hey Y'all. Neat Site.

I am in the process of building my kids a comp to do homework on so I can stay on line more. It will be running Office 2000, Scanner, Printer, 14" monitor, Win ME, 4X CD-Rom, 16 bit sound (Yamaha card). Just very basic. I have a K6-2 400 and 2x64M PC100 sticks already. I was looking for a cheap, but good board to put in a micro case and found a Lucky Star 5MVP3 SS7 w\512k cache for $65 on Pricewatch (I would rather have another Tyan S1590 but am not going to dish out $114). Is this a good board or are there problems with it ??

____________________
From the Arizona Desert

Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word,
unless you connect @ 24000 all day.

--------------------
AMD K6-III 450+ o/c to 550 @ 2.0 Vcore
Tyan S1590S AT100
Award BIOS 162005096 1998
V90W116c Flash
V90j116c Over Flash
3DFX Socket-AHO heatsink w/ADDA 28cfm fan
3DFX Case80HO 80mm front Fan
Arctic Silver Thermal Compound
256MB Crucial CL2 PC100
Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller
WD 300BB 30GB ATA-100/7200
Radeon VE 32MB DDR
U.S.Robotics 56K Win Int 1125-04 R:2
SB Live X-Gamer
USB Scanner/Printer
Belkin 4 port USB hub
Windows Millennium
____________________

[Super Relay] Havn't heard anything much about that board

Post by Ye Olde Forum »

Posted 5-25-2001 09:00

it seems to have a recent chipset in it though. as the computer is for homework etc performance isnt the most critical factor anyway. having never heard of the board i would probably pick it up if i was in your position. just make sure that the place has a good returns policy.

Posted 5-25-2001 09:39

I never have had any dealings with this CO. (HM Computer) before, but I will check them out on Resellers.com to see what their track record is (I always do that with any NEW sites that I plan to buy from). You got a real nice site here. There's only 3 sites that I post on, AMDZONE, Rage3D, and now your's. I can't see upgrading if I don't need to, I don't need to have the biggest and fastest, just need my system to work for what I need it to do. I only upgrade when I HAVE to, so I hope that you will be around for a long time here as I am very comfortable with the system I have (but I love to Tweak) and the K6 is kind of like a cult or something. I have been in computers since MS-DOS 2.1 was new and I can't remember a processor ever having quite the Die Hards as the K6. So we do need and crave SUPPORT, even if the Hardware and Software Manufactures don't think so. We need each other, and that's just what you are doing with this forum. I thank you Sir.

____________________
From the Arizona Desert

Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word,
unless you connect @ 24000 all day.

--------------------
AMD K6-III 450+ o/c to 550 @ 2.0 Vcore
Tyan S1590S AT100
Award BIOS 162005096 1998
V90W116c Flash
V90j116c Over Flash
3DFX Socket-AHO heatsink w/ADDA 28cfm fan
3DFX Case80HO 80mm front Fan
Arctic Silver Thermal Compound
256MB Crucial CL2 PC100
Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller
WD 300BB 30GB ATA-100/7200
Radeon VE 32MB DDR
U.S.Robotics 56K Win Int 1125-04 R:2
SB Live X-Gamer
USB Scanner/Printer
Belkin 4 port USB hub
Windows Millennium
____________________

[Milt] Lucky Star 5MVP3 AT

Post by Ye Olde Forum »

Posted 5-26-2001 01:14

I own one of those mobo's. It was also sold as a BOARDRUNNER 5MVP3. It's not the greatest, but will be fine for what you want.
Mine was sold to me used, as a Boardrunner, with no manual, so I had to experiment with the jumpers to find out what was available. It has 'undocumented' multipliers of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and of course the old 2x = 6x trick. For some reason the 6x 100 POST's as 589, but won't load Windoz 98SE.
It also has an 'undocumented' 112 FSB but I have to disable my external cache in the BIOS in order to use it. Disabling a 1 meg on-board cache is too much of a performance hit to make the 112 FSB worthwhile. Your milage may vary.

I've tried my K6-3+ 450 in it, and it'll run, but not well. Needs a BIOS update to recognise the 'plus' series.

Bottom line, mine runs just fine at 550 with a K6-2 550. If you want some help with it, or links to Lucky Star, post here or drop me a line.

Milt

If you can find a Soyo 5ehm for a decent price, get it. I've found them to be a very reliable board and high compatibility with a broad range of sdram sticks (cheapo on up). In fact, I wish I had bought one of these versus the FIC 503+, due to the memory finicky attitude of the 503+. Other than that issue, the 503+ is a great board.
Best regards,KyleK6speed URL:http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/cerfst ...

It works for me! Using it with a k6-3+ @550.

You must set the multiplier to 3x and use software to set the multiplier within windows 98.

Milt: How were you able to get >100mhz FSB? Through hardare switch settings or software (eg CPUCOOL)

Craig96,
I used the hardware jumpers to get 112 FSB. CPUFSB doesn't work with my PLL. I have a Cypress/ICW W48S87-27AH. What do you have on yours? I did not get a manual with this mobo, and Boardrunner had gone tits-up, so I did a lot of experimenting (at low multiplier settings) to find out what was available.

For the 112 FSB set J6 & J7 @ 1-2, 2-3 (same as for 83, 90, & 100). Put J8, J9, J10 on 1-2, 2-3, 2-3. LMK how you make out .

What BIOS are you using on yours? I have 17/09/1998 - MVP3-586B-ITE-2A5LELIBC-00. It's an old one, I know, but I am a little leary of flashing a BIOS from Lucky Star on a mobo with the Boardrunner name on it. It would be great if I could get a K6+ series chip to work properly on this mobo!

Milt
