hard drive corruption driving me nuts

[io333]

Posted 6-2-2001 14:55

VA503+, K6-3+/450 not clocked right now, Maxtor 7200rpm now at PIO4 (was DMA33), plain jane IDE cable, bios JE4333, Win2000 SP2.

I'm getting corruption all the time. I havn't been able to make the problem go away. I'm wondering if it could possibly have to do with the bios JE4333 which gives PHENOMENAL HD SSS scores (19000+). I was just wondering if anyone else with a similar setup has been having these problems before I downflash the bios, and then RMA the drive. Even after I dropped my processor down to rated speed, HD to PIO4 (only SSS 4500 score now), and knocked my ram settings down a notch, I'm still getting corruption. Oh yea, I'm using NTFS. I was also getting the corruption with Win2kSP1.

I turned off everything running in the background.

help?

[Mr Toast] Which IDE drivers are you using?

Post by Ye Olde Forum »

Posted 6-2-2001 22:05

I use the Via 4.26a IDE miniport drivers (not the .vxd drivers). I accidentally installed the .vxd drivers once and ended up doing a fresh install shortly thereafter...

I have both the Diamdond Max Plus 40 and 45, and the 45 has been going for a while now with no worries. I really hope this is not an issue with your bios...

Posted 6-3-2001 01:19

I'm using 4.29 right now. I don't think .vxd would install with win2k as it doesn't use them .vxd files and wouldn't know what to do with one. The drive is a DM+40 20gig, 7200rpm. Are you running DMA? Are you using a regular IDE cable? which motherboard? I wish sigs worked here.

Same Exact Problems

Post by JacE »

I am on the ATX version of the VA503+, its the PA-2013. I also use the PA-2013 version of the JE4333 bios. My setup is almost exactly the same except i use an IBM Deskstar 7200 ATA100 drive and an Promise Ultra100 controller. I get major hard drive corruption right after setup copies files and boots into Windows 2k Pro for the first time causing a blue screen stating corruption errors. When I dont use the controller card and just plug the drive directly to my mb (running ata33) i dont get any errors. Only when I try to install when the hd is plugged to the controller (which then runs at ata100). Have tried reinstalling, and many other tactics and have yet been successful. I get these errors both when i use ntfs and fat32. There just isnt a solution. If anyone knows anything, it would be greatly appreciated.

How does corruption show up?

Post by mitchsc »

How does corruption show itself? I have the same mobo, bios and
W2kSP1 with two old Maxtors. No corruption.

run CHKDSK every once and a while from the command prompt. if somethings a mess, it will tell you.

I just updated to the via 4in1 drivers for the MVP3 chipset. The 4in1 version 4.31 version have been out for a while, but the ones specific for the MVP3 chipset were only put up in the last day or so. I just installed them earlier today and havn't had any corruption since. I'm keeping my fingers crossed here!

I think maybe the 4.31 drivers finally did the trick. Sheesh, if it takes this many years to get a stable platform (let's see, this machine couldn't be stable under win2k until LAST WEEK 'cause the software didn't exist), i'm ever more worried now about when it comes time to upgrade? Am I not going to have this level of stability again for several years after going to a higher level x86?

io, right on about the stability. That's the biggest reason why I'm sticking to the SS7 platform right now. Its taken me like 2 years to get my SS7 systems running stably I'm not about to start over with a new platform now, especially when the new stuff changes every couple of months (DDR, new chipsets etc.) . Sorry to hear about Y2k messing up on the 503. Although I'm glad that you're doing some poineering for the rest of us 503ers with big fast hard drives who may be upgrading to W2k before too long. I know harddrive corruption is very frustrating especially once it finally hits your system files (which it will eventually). I had the same problem when I was using a TNT2 Ultra with the 503+ , the current draw would cause hard drive corruption and I had all kinds of troubles from it.

Problem NOT solved

Post by JacE »

Well, I finally gave up and went back to an AT board, then Asus P5A-B 1.04 Rev. The harddrive and promise controller worked like a charm. I couldnt install the 4in1 drivers since it couldnt even boot into windows. Also, on W2k first bootup, it finds the corruption and often runs Chkdsk then asks me to repair the installation. Even after repairing, I still get the same errors. So right now I am sticking with the Asus board.
