Peace and quiet
Peace and quiet
I've been doing some research on the internet in the spare time I might find now and then, and have just understood how the decibel scale works...as it explains a lot to me now.

Since it is a logarithmic scale, a difference of 3db could mean a double increase in audible level for the HUMAN ear. There are ways to calculate total noise...

BUT what I'm trying to find out are ways to make my computer shut up...such as all the fan noise.

Hard drive noise is barely audible, only when reading/writing frantically. (A nice IBM 75GXP 30.4Gb).

Noise: PSU Fan, CPU fan, Case Fan, Hard drive cooler fan.

FANS!!! You can buy ones that are generally quieter, and sometimes "silent", but they aren't so effective in cooling.

How have you guys got round this sound problem if any? My computer can be heard outside the room with the door closed, but it doesn't sound like a Jumbo Jet.

I still need to research air flow/aerodynamics of heatsinks/environment around fans to reduce noise, and also materials that absorb sound.

Any suggestions/advice/experiences you gotta share?

what I did
I couldn't stand the noise anymore so I:

1. Got a "monster" vga extension cable and put the pc in the closet.
2. got rid of all fans except cpu and ps
3. put cheap quiet cpu fan on processor
4. generally don't clock much anymore 'cause of the heat issue, but the silence is worth it to me.

Re: what I did
water block the b#*$*
then it will be much better
also use the 5V line to power
other fans, also some PS have a veriable
exaust fan like my enermax 451.
declock it=slower fans.
Elf

Re: what I did
It's funny how my friend with a FOP38 doesn't think it's loud. I "think" his hearing is normal. One seems to be reaching the critical stage when you HEAR the noise, like the pipe dripping water or a mosquito when you're trying to go to sleep. Reminds me of one reason why I like sailing. Cut off the engine, and let the quiet wind gods take over. Overclocking does get its pound of flesh. That's my early morning 2 cents.

Re: Peace and quiet
I reciently took off the loud CPU fan and put on a undersized quiet one. Gave me no probs on a overclocked system. I also bought a new Power supply, (Antec 300 Watt, $49.00 at Best Buy) with a heat sensitive fan which is much better than the generic one that came with the case. The system is about 1/2 as loud as it used to be, so for my $50.00 bucks, i am happy with the results.

stackg

love the noise
get a fop38, take off the cover of your harddrive and
replace all your case fans with deltas
