To lap, or not to lap, that is the question.

First of all: Great site guys, THANKS!!!!!!!!

Is it possible (or worth the time and effort) to lap a golden orb on a K6-III+ . And the same question for "Artic silver": is it worth it? My CPU temp is usually around 89f during surfing (I use CPUcool), and 104f when playing Quake III for hours.
Anyway, thanks for any info or ideas, here's the info on my system:

K6-III+450@600(2.0v) 619 using CPUcool
EPOX MVP3G5
384 megs of PC133
GeForce 256 32meg
OS is 98se

Oh man. I just killed io333's post...

I went to reply to this thread and somehow ended up overwriting io333's post instead of writing my own. Strange as nothing appeared in the window here to give me advance warning (i.e. I did not see the stuff he had already written).

Glitch in EZBoard? Report this is you see it happen again...

Anyways, io333, kindly post your comments again. I lapped and saw a very small gain in stability

Post by Mr Toastz »

When I lapped my K6III+, I saw a VERY small gain in stability. As for Arctic Silver, I am using Arctic Silver II and have not noticed any difference. If there is one, I can't tell.

As much as these K6III+ chips are worth, you may be better off not lapping it so that you can keep the resale value intact...
AMD K6III+ 550 @619 2.2v~ DFI K6BV3+/66 Rev B 2 MB~ Cardex GF2 MX 400 4ns GS 250/250~ 256 MB Micron PC133 CAS2~ Aureal SQ2500 (I will miss Aureal)~ Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 45 46.1gb ~ etc etc etc

man i don't really remember. if it was about the gorb, i probably said something like it's been proven time and time again that the gorb is only good for stock speeds & temps. it's a serious POS for O/Cing. Also lapping won't do much in the way of actually bringing temps down to the point where you could clock any better. just smear some paste on and get a nice HSF like the GlobalWin FOP32-1 and you'll go as high as you could ever go without doing something radical like a pelt, or liquid N2

i just actually read your post. i hit 140F under heavy load and my chip is still rock solid @600Mhz (when I clock, usually I don't). With temps as low as you have, why are you even bothering?
